Following the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, Jordan appealed to theinternational community for assistance in alleviating the burden the refugees placed on Jordan’seconomy and society. For this project, I examined King Abdullah II’s rhetoric regarding Syrianrefugees in his speeches delivered between 25 September 2012 and 22 September 2020. I foundthat King Abdullah II uses the themes Burden and International Cooperation and the subthemesMorality, Jordanian Safety and Stability, and Solution to appeal for international assistance.Through these themes, Abdullah II emphasizes multilateralism and cooperation, and his rhetoricsupports the determination of Jordan as a backscratching refugee rentier state. This researchconcurs with the findings of Gerasimos Tsourapas who examined Jordanian’s rentier statusthrough policy measures.
