This treatise focuses on the teaching of clarinetist Dr. Eric Mandat. Dr. Mandat began his university teaching career in 1983 and retired from full time teaching in 2015. Over those 32 years Mandat developed unique approaches to traditional teaching concepts as well as many new concepts arrived at through his explorations in extended techniques for the clarinet. This work discusses his history as a student, his values as a musician and pedagogue, specific teaching techniques both for traditional and extended techniques, and several examples of how his compositions are in themselves teaching tools.
