The purpose of this study is to promote a greater understanding of Chinese piano education in the 21st Century: why it flourishes, and the specific ways in which piano teachers, students, and parents are nurturing a generation of over 30 million Chinese pianists. In stark contrast to the bankruptcies, lockouts, and strikes that plague music institutions in the United States due to declining ticket sales, an aging audience, cuts in arts funding for public schools, and decreased interest in serious music study among the American youth, China’s current "piano-mania" continues to engage impressively large numbers of young children and parents in classical music. This study seeks to understand this phenomenon from the perspective of those most intimately acquainted with the topic: the teachers, students, and parents. Chapter 1 addresses the problem, purpose, methodology, limitations, and need for the study. Chapter 2 explains the appeal of piano study in present-day China by comparing it to the similar "piano-mania" in the United States during The Gilded Age of 1865-1901. Chapter 3 outlines the author’s lesson observations of piano students who are studying piano in various representative contexts in China, which took place in 2015: a conservatory, an affiliate arts school, and a private studio. Chapter 4 introduces the teachers, their educational backgrounds, teaching backgrounds, and teaching methodologies. Chapter 5 summarizes the strengths and weaknesses in today’s piano education in China and concludes with an evaluation of its implications for teachers and piano students in the West.
