The purpose of this treatise is to explore the ways in which John Mayer’s unique perspective as an Indian musician, classically trained Western violinist and composer, and Indo-jazz pioneer influenced his works for clarinet. This is accomplished through a look into Mayer’s life and career, an introduction into the fundamental theories of Indian classical music, a detailed analysis of Raga Music, Sargam, and Dance Suite, and an overview of his other works for clarinet. This treatise aims to promote diversity in classical music, advocating for lesser-known works that are influenced by traditions outside of the Western classical idiom.
