Off the Beaten Path

This treatise presents a selected, graded list of violin repertoire that focuses on irregular and mixed meter. The repertoire selected for this project features works for violin and piano, violin solo, and violin duet, and includes pieces at the intermediate and advanced levels. This list is meant to serve as a resource for violinists and violin teachers to prepare their students for performing works including irregular and mixed meter in orchestral, chamber, and solo settings, and to incorporate more contemporary music into their students’ repertoire. This treatise takes a pedagogical approach by pinpointing technical and musical features for each piece, along with a suggested piece of the same general level from the standard repertoire. Additionally, this treatise provides preparatory exercises and recommended materials to supplement rhythmic training in the private lesson.
