Bartholomew Lynch Journal, 1837-1839
Pages one and two are missing, and it begins with page three, October 3, 1836.
He apparently received his initial training in the east, as he recorded successive progress in his training, and stated that he embarked in New York for Florida on board the "Southern liner called America" on December 28, 1836: landed in Charleston, South Carolina, and from there with his company proceeded to Florida. His day-by-day recordings are in detail and afford an exceptionally clear insight into army life of the period. Private Lynch was one of the few people privileged to see and have contact with Osceola, and his description of the famous Seminole Indian Chief is perhaps even more complete and impressive than any professional writer.
