Show moreUsing a large database that covers the United States manufacturing sector over the period 1958-86, this dissertation examines the impact of labor unions on three interrelated measures of economic performance: productivity, productivity growth and profits. During the period 1970-86, fully unionized industries are estimated to have had 11 percent lower productivity, 30 percent lower price-cost margins and annual growth rates almost one percentage point slower than nonunionized industries. Due to the difficulty of controlling for industry-specific effects in this study, these estimates should be viewed as the upper bound of possible union effects., Results also indicate considerable intertemporal variation. A pattern of positive union productivity effects prior to the early 1970s is replaced by increasingly negative effects thereafter. The trend in growth effects is less clear, but the greatest differential in growth rates is found in the years 1975-82, a period when the economy as a whole grew slowly. Negative union profit effects also have become stronger over time., These results need to be evaluated within the context of major changes that have occurred both in the strength of the labor movement and in the economic environment within which it operates. Low levels of inflation and unemployment, and growth rates which exceeded the historical norm prior to the early 1970s were replaced by years of inflation and recession. Deregulation, antitrust actions and increased imports created an increasingly competitive economy, while the wage premiums associated with employing a union labor force reached historically high levels. This higher labor cost commitment reduced profits in the unionized sector. More competitive pricing may also be part of the explanation for negative productivity (value-added) effects in that sector. The evidence is also consistent with the argument that this weak economic performance is due to changes in labor-management relations and policies of union avoidance which in turn have resulted from increased pressure on profits.

Show morePrivate sector unionization has declined dramatically over the past several decades. This dissertation examines private sector union decline through two related but distinct studies. Using a content analysis of 300 cases from the National Labor Relations Board, the first study explores management's strategies of resistance to unionization and regional variation in this resistance. Using the same dataset, the second study investigates whether both movement proponents and movement adversaries use emotions, and if so, how, in the context of unionization movements. It further examines whether the priming of specific emotions by movement proponents and/or adversaries might be a contributing factor to the decline of union election wins. Key findings from the study of management resistance include evidence of widespread management resistance to union threat, and a resistance to union threat that is consistent with a regionally specific threat weakness explanation of movement repression. Key findings from the study of management and employee emotion priming include evidence of widespread emotion priming from both groups, and evidence that the priming of certain key emotions influences election outcomes negatively. Taken together, these studies contribute to the literatures on social movement repression, union decline, and emotions. The dissertation concludes with a review of study limitations and suggestions for future research.

The first purpose was to assess the impact, if any, of unionization upon public librarians' attitudes toward the profession of librarianship and toward unionization. The second purpose was to determine what relationship, if any, existed between the type of union within their institutions, and their attitudes., Two thousand, three hundred and seventeen public librarians employed in unionized and nonunionized public libraries serving populations of 100,000 and over, were surveyed with questionnaires., Three major research questions were examined: (1) What is the relationship between the presence or absence of unions in public libraries and the attitudes toward unionization and toward the profession of librarianship of the librarians employed there; (2) What is the relationship of union membership to librarians' attitudes toward unionization and toward the profession of librarianship in unionized public libraries; and (3) What is the relationship of the type of union (independent or nationally affiliated) present in the library, to librarians' attitudes toward unionization and toward the profession of librarianship in unionized public libraries?, Additionally, the demographic data obtained from respondents were examined in relation to their attitudes regarding unionization and librarianship; and respondents' attitudes toward unionization and toward librarianship were examined in relation to each other., T-tests were used to examine the three major research questions, and stepwise multiple regression was used to examine the additional research interests., The study's major findings indicate that: (1) Public librarians employed in unionized libraries hold more favorable attitudes toward unionization than do public librarians employed in libraries without unions; (2) Union members hold more favorable attitudes toward unionization than do union nonmembers; (3) Union members hold less favorable attitudes toward service than do union nonmembers; and (4) Generally, librarians who hold more positive attitudes toward unionization are more likely to have had more experience with unions, be employed in larger libraries, have worked less years as professional librarians, command lower salaries, be politically liberal, be primarily involved in nonadministrative duties, and be employed to libraries without staff associations.

Show moreThis dissertation is written in the context of the radically changing Chinese society, in which the individual easily gets separated from the meaning of life and follows the dualistic social conventions for success. This problem is consistent with the situation of the present educational practice in schools. Education does not respond students' disconnection from the radically changing society and thus cannot provide a meaningful resource for cultivating individuals' self-identity. Thus, this dissertation suggests a philosophy of education which highlights the cultivation of students' unique but inclusive individuality so that the individual learns how to nurture one's own mind in this radically changing context rather than getting lost and feeling empty. This conception of individuality is inspired by the American pragmatist John Dewey and the Chinese Confucian scholar Liang Shuming, a contemporary of Dewey. I use a methodology of comparative philosophy of education to discuss my proposal on individuality and education. I am not trying to write Dewey and Liang's thought in a "right" way; neither am I trying to compare Dewey and Liang's thought for judgment. It is more about dialogue and communication, to learn from different but related thoughts for solving the problem in the present. I am using a pragmatic approach to launch a philosophical discussion. Because my concern is shared by Dewey and Liang in their respective projects, this dialogue can be meaningful for my question. After discussing Dewey's and Liang's thoughts, I propose a new idea of education: to cultivate a unique but inclusive individuality by going through inner struggles and gaining self-enlightenment. Finally, the dissertation proposes story-telling as a teaching approach to create new space for students and teachers in school. Story-telling is a method that the individual can interpret life experience in multiple ways to explore different alternatives and possibilities she may have and to find the consistent meaning to connect the past to the present. It is also a method of self-expression when the individual goes through inner struggle and finds connection with the world outside. In this effort, the individual is developing a mind of her own. Narrative is thus a method worth trying in the current educational practice to formulate a new philosophy of education which emphasizes the development of unique and inclusive individuality as one goal of education.

Show moreDespite many previous studies on reading fluency (measured by a maze task) as a screening measure, our understanding is limited about the utility of silent reading fluency in predicting later reading comprehension and contextual influences (e.g., schools and districts) on reading comprehension achievement. In the present study we examined: (1) How much variance in reading comprehension scores exist between students, classes, schools, and districts for children in grades 3–10; and (2) whether silent reading fluency measured by a maze task adds a unique contribution to the prediction of spring reading comprehension after accounting for fall spelling and reading comprehension. Results showed that a substantial amount of variance in reading comprehension is attributable to differences among classrooms (21–46 %), particularly in grades 6–10. In addition, approximately 3–5 % of variance in reading comprehension was attributable to differences among schools and districts. Silent reading fluency also explained a unique amount of variance in spring reading comprehension after accounting for students’ performance in reading comprehension and spelling in the fall. Unique variance (pseudo-R 2) varied from 2 to 10 % at the student, class, school, and district levels. These results suggest that a maze task has potential utility as a screening measure of reading comprehension for students in grades 3–10. Furthermore, differences among classrooms, schools, and districts matter for students’ reading comprehension achievement.

Show moreLongitudinal predictors of writing composition in Chinese and English written by the same 153 Hong Kong nine-year-old children were tested, and their production errors within the English essays across ten categories, focusing on punctuation, spelling, and grammar, were compared to errors made by ninety American nine-year-olds writing on the same topic. The correlation between quality of the compositions in Chinese and English was .53. In stepwise regression analyses examining early predictors at ages between five and nine years, tasks of speed or fluency were consistently uniquely associated with Chinese writing composition; measures of English vocabulary knowledge, word reading, or both were consistently uniquely associated with English writing quality. Compared to the American children, Chinese children's writing reflected significantly higher proportions of errors in all grammatical categories but did not differ in punctuation or spelling. Findings underscore both similarities and differences in writing at different levels across languages.

Show moreMost early modern playwrights exploit the tonal and representational advantages of prose on stage, and this is especially true of Shakespeare: with the exception of King John and Richard II, all of Shakespeare’s unassisted plays incorporate dramatic prose speeches as a complement to and deviation from dramatic verse. Yet despite the incontrovertible ubiquity of dramatic prose in Shakespeare’s works and on the early modern stage more generally, we currently lack the analytical and methodological terminology necessary to describe how Shakespeare’s prose is different from anyone else’s. This descriptive lapse becomes especially important when we realize that with the exception of 1 and 3 Henry VI, every play with a contested attribution to Shakespeare incorporates dramatic prose speeches. My dissertation examines three separate but interrelated problems in early modern studies: what constitutes dramatic prose? What specific forms does it assume in Shakespeare’s canon? And can we differentiate Shakespeare’s dramatic prose from dramatic prose written by his contemporaries? Drawing on a sustained engagement with the dramatic prose of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, my project illuminates the critical and literary grounds for determining the unique characteristics of Shakespeare’s dramatic prose. The structure and scope of my analysis position this aspect of Shakespeare’s style on interconnected critical and computational trajectories with marked theoretical and empirical outcomes.

"Unit Cohesion Among the Three Soviet Women's Air Regiments During World War II" analyzes the factors that shaped the cohesion of the three women's regiments formed from Aviation Group No. 122. Unit cohesion is the glue that holds together a military unit through times of adversity, fear of death, and unimaginable suffering and sacrifice. Many factors affect the cohesion of a unit. The factors discussed in this study are: the effectiveness of command, the plane each regiment flew, the gender composition of the unit, and the reaction of men to the women fighting. This thesis utilized the published memoirs written by veterans of the women's regiments along with interviews conducted years later by Anne Noggle and Reina Pennington. The study of these women presents a tremendous opportunity to straddle military history, women's studies, and Russian history to establish precedence in contemporary debates surrounding the use of female combatants.

Show moreThis dissertation seeks to demonstrate the process of foreign policy-making during the early years of the Cold War. It concentrates on the development of United States interest in the concept of a European Army as a means of establishing a stronger defense posture against world communism. This concept is shown to have been a response to the outbreak of the Korean War and the loss of the American monopoly on atomic weapons. The Truman administration's policy toward German rearmament is traced through the attempt to persuade Western Europe to form its own defense system with American support, both militarily and monetarily. To a great degree, this policy is viewed as shared by the Eisenhower administration. Both administrations are seen seeking to strengthen Western Europe through cooperative efforts beginning with the Marshall Plan and ending with West Germany's admission into NATO. For the United States, the policy most conducive to achieving its goals of a united and armed Western Europe is shown to be the development of the European Defense Community.

Show moreIn response to a heightening concern for international justice, in the late 1990`s in Rome, Italy over 160 countries deliberated on the most suitable approach to an international standard dealing with war crimes, crimes of aggression, crimes against humanity and genocide. In reference to the International Criminal Court`s jurisdiction, these four crimes have come to be termed ―core crimes.‖ Although the culmination was the establishment of the ICC a variety of countries stood against such an establishment and fought to weaken the Court`s jurisdictional reach. The United States of America took center stage during the deliberations in Rome as one of these countries, voting against the Court with such infamous human rights abusers as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran, among others. Determined to undermine the Court`s ability to threaten national sovereignty the U.S. even went so far as to pass legislation enabling it to invade The Hague upon the possible arrest of any U.S. military representative. Despite U.S. objections though, the Court operates as a new standard for international justice and labors to hold war criminals accountable. Further, among the various movements, standards and ad hoc tribunals, the ICC stands alone as the first permanent international judicial composition with universal jurisdiction over core crimes. With the Court having a direct affect on international human rights standards and accountability, as well as being an important leader through its role on the global stage, this paper will detail the history of the aforementioned movements as well as their influence on the ICC`s creation. Further, the U.S. objections and reaction to the Court will be summarized and responded to with the conclusion that U.S. interests would be served by both signing and ratifying the Rome Treaty. Whereas a denial of ICC jurisdiction over core crimes seemingly protects national sovereignty, the same denial undermines the U.S. position of leadership in the world theatre. Finally, although more difficult to quantify, undermining the position of U.S. leadership in this manner invariably creates a far more dangerous threat to U.S. national sovereignty than does allowing the ICC to exercise complementary jurisdiction over the core crimes.

This thesis is a comparative macro model study of two countries distinct both institutionally and economically: the United States and Yugoslavia. An overview of post World-War II macroeconomic events is discussed in order to provide a background for the estimation and policy analysis of the respective macro models. Annual econometric macro models are then estimated and discussed over the period 1952-1984. Given the underlying macro model structures, model validation and tracking performance...
Show moreThis thesis is a comparative macro model study of two countries distinct both institutionally and economically: the United States and Yugoslavia. An overview of post World-War II macroeconomic events is discussed in order to provide a background for the estimation and policy analysis of the respective macro models. Annual econometric macro models are then estimated and discussed over the period 1952-1984. Given the underlying macro model structures, model validation and tracking performance is undertaken. Following the historical performance of the models, alternative policy experiments are entertained. Expansionary fiscal and monetary policy experiments of equal magnitude are conducted for both the United States and Yugoslavia. The relative strengths of fiscal and monetary policy are then diagnosed. Further policy experiments tailored, more specifically, to the economic situation prevailing in the respective economies are conducted.

Show moreThe problem addressed by this study is the observed low levels of compliance with federal policy on website accessibility. The study examines the two key federal policies that promote website accessibility, using a side-by-side policy analysis technique. The analysis examines the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which together have the intent of establishing a legal mandate for equality regarding website accessibility. In comparing key aspects of these two policies, the findings indicate several areas were the policies were inconsistent or unclear in providing guidance on attaining accessible websites. The study performed an accessibility analysis that included automated testing, an expert review, and a content review of six federal health care websites. Recommendations call for the establishment of federal programs that would provide federal website managers with additional training in website accessibility, and provide support for ongoing research towards developing guidance and tools that would serve to promote websites that are more accessible.
