Geology and surface topography of the basin is controlled by sediments of Upper Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Quaternary age. In the portion of the basin south of the Cody Scarp, the Middle and Upper Miocene sediments have been eroded and the surface elevations are much lower than the northern upland. The Florida Aquifer is the principal source of ground water for the St. Marks basin. The major producing zone of the aquifer is comprised of limestones of Upper Eocene to Lower Miocene age. Overlying younger sediments serve as confining units throughout the northern half of the basin. Hydrologically, the aquifer is more transmissive near the St. Marks River. Water levels are generally higher in the recharge area in the northern portion of the basin with flow paths generally towards the springs and discharge areas near the Gulf of Mexico. Recharge is predominantly from local rainfall although some ground water is being contributed from the adjacent basin to the north"--Abstract.

An analysis will be made of the present geography programs in the Florida public junior colleges to determine their orientation. This analysis will be concerned with the development of geography in the curriculum rather than with methods of instruction. A study of the catalogs of the various institutions plus information gathered through questionnaires constitute the main basis of analysis. Taking into consideration the objectives of general education, the objectives of the junior colleges, and the objectives of geography, the writer hopes to offer suggestions and recommendations which will make a useful contribution to the concurrent achievement of these objectives in Florida"--Introduction.

Show moreIn working with the disabled and/or handicapped person it is necessary to consider all aspects of social functioning if realistic goals are to be reached in the rehabilitation process. It is recognized that if the family can give interest and support to that member of the family who is disabled and/or handicapped, and agrees to participate in rehabilitation planning that the effect will be helpful. The dichotomy of this study sample is made between those patients living alone and those patients living with some member of their family. The null hypothesis of this study is that there are no differences between the observed and expected frequencies on eleven items of descriptive, social, and clinical information as revealed in the distribution of data for thirty-four adult physically disabled and/or handicapped patients who live with some member of their family and thirty-six adult physically disabled and/or handicapped patients who live alone, which could not occur by chance.

The Child Guidance Clinic serving Dade County opened for service in January, 1948, and the records were examined from that date through December, 1958. The hypothesis of this study is that there is an age, sex, and/or referral source pattern revealed in the distribution of cases opened during an 11-year period at the Dade County Child Guidance Clinic, Miami, Florida, and that there are no differences in these patterns between the first 5 years and the last 5 years of the Clinic's 11-year existence. The word "pattern" is used to mean a distribution which was evidenced consistently throughout the Clinic records and which could be expected to continue unless extensive changes are made in Clinic policies or within the community"--Introduction.

Thus historical knowledge gives perspective and serves as a point of departure for building today and tomorrow's practices in government, religion, and social living. Reading about the lives of leaders in various realms of American life can make history more enjoyable as well as more realistic. As a librarian the writer would like to see biography used more widely as a correlative material to stimulate greater interest in the social studies. Consequently the purpose of this paper is: (1) to suggest the value of biography in developing desirable social concepts and democratic principles which will benefit the student in his daily living as well as make it possible for him to become a better citizen of tomorrow's world; and (2) to suggest biographies suitable for correlation with junior high school social studies"--Introduction.

Sometimes these, and similar questions, result in answers subjective in character being framed in such sweeping generalizations as today's youth does little or no personal reading. Such statements have been the motive for numerous investigative surveys. These studies have revealed the value of a permanent interest in reading as an essential aid to personal development and social culture. They have pointed out the increasing demands made by society for greater proficiency in reading. Also, they have shown the importance of the reading program in the curriculum as a medium for establishing in youth a permanent interest in reading both for information and for recreation. Thus far, however, surveys have not established the fact that reading interests and habits differ between rural and urban pupils. This study, therefore, is an attempt to discover what differences, if any, exist in the reading interests and habits between a group of rural and urban children. The pupils considered are those enrolled during the 1950-51 session in the tenth grade in Walton High School DeFuniak Springs, Florida. In the course of this paper, pupils who ride school busses a distance of two miles or more are to be identified as 'transported' pupils; those who live within a radius of two miles of the school center and who do not ride school busses are to be referred to as 'non-transported' pupils"--Introduction.

Cordor, R.N., Educational Director, Florida State Board of Nurse Registration and Nurse Education, Jacksonville, Florida, and from personal investigation in the fields of nursing and library service. This writer's choice of subject has grown out of an interest in nursing and the problems of library service in nursing schools. Problems in nursing school libraries are similar to those in other specialized libraries having their own particular subject matter and terminology. It is assumed that this study will be of help to the professional non-collegiate schools of nursing in Florida in improving their libraries and of interest as vocational guidance to high school students investigating the fields of nursing"--Introduction.

Show more"The American public is being inundated by newspaper and magazine articles conveying the message that schools in the United States must develop and improve their science curricula if the nation is to compete successfully with ideologies inimical to that taught in this country. Some of these articles concern themselves with immediate remedies, such as more frequent testing of scientific aptitude and progress from the seventh grade on, and providing more teaching materials for all grade levels. Others analyze the present trend of awarding large numbers of college scholarships to high school students. A few of the articles are more philosophical in content: some of these, for example, decry the national habit of secrecy in scientific research. This study has grown out of this widespread concern. It seems reasonable to assume that one significant factor in determining the quality of instruction in science in a senior high school is the adequacy of the instructional materials accessible to the students and teachers of that school. It has seemed timely and pertinent, then, to examine such materials in the four white senior high schools of Broward County and to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses"--Introduction.

Two years later, after much discussion and study, the school returned to its former method of grouping, which was simply dividing the names of the boys and girls among the various teachers of each grade. Test scores of the sixth grade children during two years of each method of grouping were carefully retained and compared. It is as a member of Yniestra faculty, and in the light of those scores, that this study of grouping was undertaken.
