Despite decades of studies of the photoproduction of hyperons, both their production mechanisms and their spectra of excited states are still largely unknown. While the parity-violating weak decay of hyperons offers a means of measuring their polarization, which could help discern their production mechanisms and identify their excitation spectra, no such study has been possible for doubly strange baryons in photoproduction, due to low production cross sections. Show moreDespite decades of studies of the photoproduction of hyperons, both their production mechanisms and their spectra of excited states are still largely unknown. While the parity-violating weak decay of hyperons offers a means of measuring their polarization, which could help discern their production mechanisms and identify their excitation spectra, no such study has been possible for doubly strange baryons in photoproduction, due to low production cross sections. However, by making use of the reaction gamma p -> K+K+Xi(-), we have measured, for the first time, the induced polarization, P, and the transferred polarization from circularly polarized real photons, characterized by C-x and C-z, to recoiling Xi(-) s. The data were obtained using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab for photon energies from just over threshold (2.4 GeV) to 5.45 GeV. These first-time measurements are compared, and are shown to broadly agree, with model predictions in which cascade photoproduction proceeds through the decay of intermediate hyperon resonances that are produced via relativistic meson exchange, offering a new step forward in the understanding of the production and polarization of doubly-strange baryons. We scattered 6-GeV, longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons in a cryogenic (14)NH(3)target, and extracted double and single target spin asymmetries for ep -> e'pi(0)Xin multidimensional bins in four-momentum transfer (1.0 < Q(2) < 3.2GeV(2)), Bjorken-x(0.12 < x < 0.48), hadron energy fraction (0.4 < z < 0.7), transverse pion momentum (0 < P-T < 1.0GeV), and azimuthal angel phi(h) between the lepton scattering and hadron production planes. We extracted asymmetries as a function of both xand P-T, which provide access to transverse-momentum distributions of longitudinally polarized quarks. The double spin asymmetries depend weakly on P-T. The sin2 phi(h) moments are zero within uncertainties, which is consistent with the expected suppression of the Collins fragmentation function. The observed sin phi(h) moments suggest that quark gluon correlations are significant at large x. (C) 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The cross section for coherent omega-meson photoproduction off the deuteron has been measured for the first time as a function of the momentum transfer t=(P-gamma - P-omega)(2) and photon energy E-gamma using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Exclusive photoproduction cross sections have been measured for the process gamma p -> p pi degrees[e(+) e(-)(gamma)] with the Dalitz decay final state using tagged photon energies in the range of E-gamma = 1.275-5.425 GeV. The complete angular distribution of the final state pi degrees, for the entire photon energy range up to large values of t and u, has been measured for the first time. Show moreExclusive photoproduction cross sections have been measured for the process gamma p -> p pi degrees[e(+) e(-)(gamma)] with the Dalitz decay final state using tagged photon energies in the range of E-gamma = 1.275-5.425 GeV. The complete angular distribution of the final state pi degrees, for the entire photon energy range up to large values of t and u, has been measured for the first time. The data obtained show that the cross section d sigma / dt, at mid to large angles, decreases with energy as s(-6.89 +/- 0.26). This is in agreement with the perturbative QCD quark counting rule prediction of s(-7). Paradoxically, the size of angular distribution of measured cross sections is greatly underestimated by the QCD-based generalized parton distribution mechanism at highest available invariant energy s = 11 GeV2. At the same time, the Regge-exchange-based models for pi degrees photoproduction are more consistent with experimental data.

We find that the positively and the negatively charged pion pairs yield consistent results, and their correlation functions are represented, within uncertainties, by the same Levy-stable source functions. The lambda(m(T)) measurements indicate a decrease of the strength of the correlations at low m(T). The Levy length scale parameter R(m(T)) decreases with increasing m(T), following a hydrodynamically predicted type of scaling behavior. The values of the Levy index of stability a are found to be significantly lower than the Gaussian case of alpha = 2, but also significantly larger than the conjectured value that may characterize the critical point of a second-order quark-hadron phase transition.

The photoproduction of omega mesons off the proton has been studied in the reaction gamma p -> p omega using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and the frozen-spin target in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time, the target asymmetry T has been measured in photoproduction from the decay omega -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), using a transversely polarized target with energies ranging from just above the reaction threshold up to 2.8 GeV. Significant nonzero values are observed for these asymmetries, reaching about 30-40% in the third-resonance region. New measurements for the photon-beam asymmetry Sigma are also presented, which agree well with previous CLAS results and extend the world database up to 2.1 GeV. These data and additional. photoproduction observables from CLAS were included in a partial-wave analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina framework. Significant contributions from s-channel resonance production were found in addition to t-channel exchange processes.

The exclusive reaction gamma p -> pK(+) K- was studied in the photon energy range 3.0-3.8 GeV and momentum transfer range 0.6 < -t < 1.3 GeV2. Besides the dominant contribution of the phi meson in the P wave, evidence for S - P interference was found. The differential production cross sections d sigma/dt for individual waves in the mass range of the phi resonance were extracted and compared to predictions of a Regge-inspired model. This is the first time the t-dependent cross section of the S-wave contribution to the elastic K+ K- photoproduction has been measured.

The results were found to be in agreement with previously available data where they overlap. A preliminary interpretation of the extracted cross sections, which was based on a phenomenological meson-baryon reaction model, revealed substantial relative contributions from nucleon resonances. The data offer promising prospects to improve knowledge on the Q(2) evolution of the electrocouplings of most resonances with masses up to similar to 1.8 GeV.

The cross section of the exclusive eta electroproduction reaction ep -> e'p'eta was measured at Jefferson Laboratorywith a 5.75 GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. At low t, both pi(0) and eta are described reasonably well by generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in which chiral-odd transversity GPDs are dominant. The pi(0) and eta data, when taken together, can facilitate the flavor decomposition of the transversity GPDs.

The addition of these data to the world database results in marked changes in the predictions for the Eobservable from that model. Show moreWe report the measurement of cumulants (C-n,n = 1, ..., 4) of the net-charge distributions measured within pseudorapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.35) in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 7.7-200 GeV with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ratios of cumulants (e.g., C-1/C-2, C-3/C-1) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of C-1/C-2 and C-3/C-1 can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy. The extracted baryon chemical potentials are in excellent agreement with a thermal-statistical analysis model.

We measured the g(1) spin structure function of the deuteron at low Q(2), where QCD can be approximated with chiral perturbation theory (chi PT). The data cover the resonance region, up to an invariant mass of W approximate to 1.9 GeV. The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum, the moment Gamma(d)(1) and the spin polarizability gamma(d)(0) are precisely determined down to a minimum Q(2) of 0.02 GeV2 for the first time, about 2.5 times lower than that of previous data. We report measurements of target- and double-spin asymmetries for the exclusive channel (e) over right arrow (p) over right arrow -> ep(+)(n) in the nucleon resonance region at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). These asymmetries were extracted from data obtained using a longitudinally polarized NH3 target and a longitudinally polarized electron beam with energies 1.1, 1.3, 2.0, 2.3, and 3.0 GeV. These asymmetries were extracted from data obtained using a longitudinally polarized NH3 target and a longitudinally polarized electron beam with energies 1.1, 1.3, 2.0, 2.3, and 3.0 GeV. The new results are consistent with previous CLAS publications but are extended to a low Q(2) range from 0.0065 to 0.35 (GeV/c)(2). The Q(2) access was made possible by a custom-built Cherenkov detector that allowed the detection of electrons for scattering angles as low as 6 degrees. These results are compared with the unitary isobar models JANR and MAID, the partial-wave analysis prediction from SAID, and the dynamic model DMT. In many kinematic regions our results, in particular results on the target asymmetry, help to constrain the polarization-dependent components of these models.

The f(1)(1285) meson withmass 1281.0 +/- 0.8MeV/c(2) and width 18.4 +/- 1.4MeV (full width at half maximum) was measured for the first time in photoproduction from a proton target using CLAS at Jefferson Lab. The mass, width, and an amplitude analysis of the eta pi(+)pi(-) final-state Dalitz distribution are consistent with the axial-vector J(P) = 1(+) f(1)(1285) identity, rather than the pseudoscalar 0(-) eta(1295). The production mechanism is more consistent with s-channel decay of a high-mass N* state and not with t-channel meson exchange. Decays to eta pi pi go dominantly via the intermediate a(0)(+/-) (980)pi(-/+) states, with the branching ratio Gamma [a(0)pi (no (K) over barK)]/Gamma[eta pi pi (all)] = 0.74 +/- 0.09. The branching ratios Gamma (K (K) over bar pi)/Gamma(eta pi pi) = 0.216 +/- 0.033 and Gamma (gamma rho(0))/Gamma(eta pi pi) = 0.047 +/- 0.018 were also obtained. The first is in agreement with previous data for the f(1)(1285), while the latter is lower than the world average.

Show moreBackground: Measurements of polarization observables for the reactions (gamma) over right arrowp -> K+ Lambda and (gamma) over right arrowp -> K+ Sigma(0) have been performed. This is part of a program of measurements designed to study the spectrum of baryon resonances in particular, and nonperturbative QCD in general. Purpose: The accurate measurement of several polarization observables provides tight constraints for phenomenological fits, which allow the study of strangeness in nucleon and nuclear systems. Beam-recoil observables for the (gamma) over right arrowp -> K+ Sigma(0) reaction have not been reported before now. Method: Themeasurements were carried out using linearly polarized photon beams incident on a liquid hydrogen target, and the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The energy range of the results is 1.71 < W < 2.19 GeV, with an angular range -0.75 < cos theta(K)* < +0.85. Results: The observables extracted for both reactions are beam asymmetry Sigma, target asymmetry T, and the beam-recoil double polarization observables O-x and O-z. Conclusions: Comparison with theoretical fits indicates that, in the regions where no previous data existed, the new data contain significant new information, and strengthen the evidence for the set of resonances used in the latest Bonn-Gatchina fit.

Additionally, the nuclear-modification factor in Cu + Au collisions averaged over all centrality is measured to be similar to the previous PHENIX result in d + Au collisions for these rapidities.

The f(0)(1500) meson resonance is one of several contenders to have significant mixing with the lightest glueball. This resonance is well established from several previous experiments. Here we present the first photoproduction data for the f(0)(1500) via decay into the K-S(0) K-S(0) channel using the CLAS detector. This is enhanced if the measured four-momentum transfer to the proton target is restricted to be less than 1.0 GeV2. By comparing data with simulations, it can be concluded that the peak at 1500 MeV is produced primarily at low t, which is consistent with a t-channel production mechanism.

We present measurements of e(+)e-production at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The invariant yield is studied within the PHENIX detector acceptance over a wide range of mass (m(ee) < 5 GeV/c(2)) and pair transverse momentum (p(T) < 5 GeV/c) for minimum bias and for five centrality classes. The e(+)e(-) yield is compared to the expectations from known sources. In the low-mass region (m(ee) = 0.30-0.76 GeV/c(2)) there is an enhancement that increases with centrality and is distributed over the entire pair p(T) range measured. It is significantly smaller than previously reported by the PHENIX experiment and amounts to 2.3 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.4(syst) +/- 0.2(model) or to 1.7 +/- 0.3(stat) +/- 0.3(syst) +/- 0.2(model) for minimum bias collisions when the open heavy-flavor contribution is calculated with PYTHIA or MC@NLO, respectively. The inclusive mass and p(T) distributions, as well as the centrality dependence, are well reproduced by model calculations where the enhancement mainly originates from the melting of the rho meson resonance as the system approaches chiral symmetry restoration. In the intermediate-mass region (m(ee) = 1.2-2.8 GeV/c(2)), the data hint at a significant contribution in addition to the yield from the semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor mesons.

Using pi(0) in Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and and charged hadrons in Pb + Pb collisions measured by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, we studied the scaling properties of S-loss as a function of a number of variables: the number of participants, N-part, the number of quark participants, N-qp, the charged-particle density, dN(ch)/d(eta), and the Bjorken energy density times the equilibration time, epsilon(Bj)tau(0). We find that the p(T), where S-loss has its maximum, varies both with centrality and collision energy. Above the maximum, S-loss tends to follow a power-law function with all four scaling variables. The data at root s(NN) = 200 GeV and 2.76 TeV, for sufficiently high particle densities, have a common scaling of S-loss with dN(ch)/d(eta) and epsilon(Bj)tau(0), lending insight into the physics of parton energy loss.

The results were obtained from scattering of 6-GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The kinematic ranges covered are 1.1 < W < 3 GeV and 1 < Q(2) < 6 GeV2. Results were obtained for about 5700 bins in W, Q(2), cos(theta(*)), and phi(*). The beam-target asymmetries were found to generally be greater than zero, with relatively modest phi(*) dependence. The target asymmetries exhibit very strong phi(*) dependence, with a change in sign occurring between results at low W and high W, in contrast to pi(+) electroproduction. Reasonable agreement is found with phenomenological fits to previous data for W < 1.6 GeV, but significant differences are seen at higherW. When combined with cross-sectional measurements, as well as pi(+) observables, the present results will provide powerful constraints on nucleon resonance amplitudes at moderate and large values of Q(2), for resonances with masses as high as 2.4 GeV.

Show moreThe target and double spin asymmetries of the exclusive pseudoscalar channel (e) over right arrow(p) over right arrow -> ep pi(0) ere measured for the first time in the deep-inelastic regime using a longitudinally polarized 5.9 GeV electron beam and a longitudinally polarized proton target at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The data were collected over a large kinematic phase space and divided into 110 four-dimensional bins of Q(2), x(B), -t and phi. Large values of asymmetry moments clearly indicate a substantial contribution to the polarized structure functions from transverse virtual photon amplitudes. The interpretation of experimental data in terms of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) provides the first insight on the chiral-odd GPDs (I) over tildeI(T) and E-T, and complement previous measurements of unpolarized structure functions sensitive to the GPDs H-T and (E) over bar (T). These data provide a crucial input for parametrizations of essentially unknown chiral-odd GPDs and will strongly influence existing theoretical calculations based on the handbag formalism. The asymmetry results were divided into approximately 40 000 kinematic bins for pi(+) from free protons and 15 000 bins for pi(-) production from bound nucleons in the deuteron. The present results are found to be in reasonable agreement with fits to previous world data for W < 1.7 GeV and Q(2) < 0.5 GeV2, with discrepancies increasing at higher values of Q(2), especially for W > 1.5 GeV. Very large target-spin asymmetries are observed for W > 1.6 GeV. When combined with cross-section measurements, the present results can provide powerful constraints on nucleon resonance amplitudes at moderate and large values of Q(2), for resonances with masses as high as 2.3 GeV.

Measurements of midrapidity charged-particle multiplicity distributions, dN(ch)/d eta, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, dE(T)/d eta, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu + Cu collisions at root s(NN) = 200 and 62.4 GeV, Cu + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV, U + U collisions at root s(NN) = 193 GeV, d + Au collisions at root s(NN)...

Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, N-part, and the number of constituent quark participants, N-qp. For all A + A collisions down to root s(NN) = 7.7 GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with N-qp than scaling with N-part. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, epsilon(BJ), and the ratio of dE(T)/d eta to dN(ch)/d eta, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.
