The children represented in the study were admitted to a children's institution which provided for their physical and supervisory care. The children represented in the study were admitted to a children's institution which provided for their physical and supervisory care. Major attention throughout the study was focused on the parental problems as reflected in the impairment in ability of the parents for continued care of their children. The study does not endeavor to isolate or define the specific causalities of parental impairment. "The purpose of the study is to describe and compare the presenting and the underlying problems of eighteen adopted children and eighteen natural children seen in the Jefferson County Mental Health Clinic from January, 1955, through November, 1960. An attempt will be made to determine whether there are significant differences observed between the problems of the two groups, either the problems which precipitated the first Clinic contact, or those which Clinic evaluation revealed, or both....
