Show moreA vocabulary intervention during shared storybook reading was implemented with 22 Spanish-English bilingual children. One intervention consisted of English expansions of vocabulary words and the other of English-supplemented-with-Spanish instruction. Participants between the ages of 4 and 6 received both interventions during a four-week summer program. It was hypothesized that the intervention incorporating Spanish would produce greater learning in three areas: naming, receptive knowledge, and expressive definitions. It also was hypothesized that the children's initial language proficiency in each language would affect their learning from Spanish vocabulary expansions. Results revealed significant improvement in all three areas. The Spanish vocabulary expansions condition produced the greatest gains in expressive definitions. Also, the children's initial language proficiency in Spanish and English was found to affect the children's possible gains from the intervention. The thirteen participants with limited skills in both languages showed significantly less vocabulary growth than the participants who had strong skills in Spanish. Although both languages of intervention were beneficial, there were additional benefits to using Spanish expansions in the vocabulary instruction. Findings support previous literature that suggests shared reading is a useful tool to enhance word learning. This is especially true for bilingual children when supporting and strengthening a child's first language and facilitating second-language acquisition. Future research should explore additional ways of enhancing the vocabulary growth of children with limited skills in both languages.

- Psychology of the number consciousness.
- Creator

Helseth, Inga Olla, Florida State University
- Abstract/Description
-
"Number is one of man's schemes for adapting himself to his environment. Development of the concept of number in man is intricately bound up with growth in him of language. Man is a social being and almost from birth, language activity becomes a part of his reactions to stimuli. He is therefore apt to use a partial language response even when the stimulus does not come from a strictly social setting"--Introduction.

The purpose of this study is to deal specifically with three administrative problems which were in outstanding need of improvement in Bay County in September 1943. These problems concerned the management of textbooks, libraries, and lunchrooms. In dealing with each of these problems, a survey of the situation in September, 1943, will be presented first, then a study of accomplishments for the 1943-1944 term, and lastly tentative plans for further development and improvement.

Rather it is a continuing process, a working medium, a tool by which we gather information, deepen understanding and appreciation, and acquire insight into life, from the primary stages throughout the entire span. This tool must necessarily require a lifetime of sharpening as a result of the rapid development of urban society. The individual of today now faces more complicated problems than in any previous generation. Recent reading conferences indicate a trend toward a far broader concept than in the past. The challenging age in which we are living requires that "Reading must provide more largely in the future than in the past for promoting clear understanding, developing habits of good thinking, stimulating broad interests, cultivating appreciation and establishing stable personalities."

A program for teaching reading for a fifth grade, if well done, will broaden the experience of the children. Effective reading instruction must be based on understanding the developmental needs of the learner and providing adequate guidance. The teaching program must provide large objectives which can be followed throughout the year. An effort must be made to find the best method of creating in the pupils the desire to read both for self-improvement and for leisure time.

How then shall we envision an education that is adequate to meet the imperative need of the epoch?' Robert D. Dolley, one of the leaders in the field of Vocational Education in the United States today, has already discovered the partial solution to the above question. It was through his keen vision and understanding of the problems that are confronting the schools today that he worked out the plan of operation for the Diversified Cooperative Training program some ten years ago. This program, although young in years, has spread through the United States and has proved its effectiveness and practicality everywhere it has been established. It can be said with some measure of assurance that this DCT program will be adopted by most of the schools of the nation as one method of meeting the needs of the students and of bridging the gap between the schools and the community"--Introduction.

When the curriculum fits the child and the child develops a natural relationship with the curriculum, when the instruction is astute and the guidance wise, the child learns. The curriculum, broadly interpreted, includes the materials, equipment and experience which adequately meet the physical, mental, social and emotional needs of children of a particular stage of development. Obviously, unlimited opportunities and a setting must be provided for creative experiences under the wise guidance of the teacher. In order to further this program, the following aims must be considered in planning the curriculum: 1. To give the child a feeling of security and freedom from fear in his relationships of school. 2. To provide experiences which will gradually broaden his small world and give it more meaning. 3. To help him rely more and more on himself and on his own judgment in areas where he can take full responsibility. 4. To guide him in forming solid friendships with his contemporaries. 5. To help him enjoy creative work and to know that his own expression of what he sees and feels is of greater value than anything he could imitate. 6. To create the kind of democratic atmosphere in which he feels free to express his agreements and disagreements with adults and other children, and in which he can understand that rules grow out of living together, both in the classroom and in the school as a whole. 7. To help him gain a sense of his value in the group. 8. To provide the guidance and facilities necessary for him to develop skills, appropriate to this age--manual, rhythmic and language"--Introduction.

The value of speech training in the public schools is not yet fully realized by educators. Perhaps speed has been ignored because almost every one in some way speaks. Fifty years ago speech training was an isolated course for a few professional men. Today thousands of men and women are seeking instruction in colleges, clinics, and even through correspondence courses. America is waking up to the importance of good speech, and America is turning to the schools for its proper development.

For a great many years American schools were able to fit themselves into a definite pattern without confusion as to their aims. Their function was to provide an opportunity for formal education. Each child either conformed to the pattern or child and school parted company. During this period, home and church were strong stabilizing factors, change was slow, and transmission of a body of "book learning!' satisfied school and lay people.

The prevailing type of "book learning" could best be accomplished indoors, where an errant butterfly might less successfully distract attention from the sad and solemn business of learning to read, spell, and cipher. Unfortunately, as education broadened its scope, it did not move out of its imprisoning walls and children continued to read textbooks about methods of seed distribution, while, unnoticed, milkweed parachutes set sail outside.

From them and through our own experiences we have learned that to achieve democratic cooperation the group must understand the nature of the process itself and be willing to take the necessary steps to achieve it. The group as a whole must realize that the well-being, happiness, and growth of each individual within the group are the basis of its strength and progress. The group members must be willing and ready to serve and to make necessary sacrifives in order that the welfare of the individual may be insured. Consequently, this study is limited to a consideration of the facilities in the twelve white schools as the beginning of a county-wide program to improve materials of instruction. Recognition of the constant need to see the educational program in Seminole County as a whole, to provide first for strengthening those aspects of the program which will benefit most directly the work of each teacher in every classroom has lead the general supervisor for the county to examine critically the materials of instruction and the facilities for making them available to children and teachers alike.

To produce a projectionist's manual for the use of students training to operate audio-visual equipment. It is realized that there are on the market several audio-visual operator's manuals; also those produced by commercial concerns to accompany various pieces of equipment, but through personal experience and the experience of others the writer feels that all of these manuals are too technical for use by elementary and high school students. Therefore the primary purpose of this study is to produce such a manual"--Introduction.

A pleasant atmosphere of cooperative interprise took the place of classroom discipline, and the teacher found herself no longer a 'party to,' but a partner in a learning situation. The program has completed its fourth year. It has been revised, adapted, and added to, when the situation indicated a need. The classes taking part in the most recently revised activities are the ones whose performances are described in this paper"--Introduction.

Out of this experience comes a knowledge of the effect the physical plant actually has as a determining factor in the teacher's ability to give proper instruction. A teacher may do his best with the equipment and facilities offered without accomplishing the same satisfactory results that could be possible under better conditions. The realization that the value of the physical plant is important has created a desire to make a study of the modern trends in school architecture and planning. From personal experience and research it is proposed that in this article ways and means be suggested whereby existing facilities might be improved at Sealey Memorial School"--Introduction.

The meanings in this language must be understood; the language must be practiced and applied to life situations if mathematics is to serve its purpose in the school curriculum. To teach mathematics in this manner is a tremendous job. It requires a teacher not only with patience, understanding of the students, and an excellent mathematics background but also with a broader general background. He will need to be able to find varied functional relationships of mathematics to life and must have the skill to help the students understand these relationships, too. In summary, good mathematics instruction includes the proper proportions and the proper interweaving of meanings, drill, and applications at the appropriate level of the student"--Introduction.

Show moreThere are a number of factors which contribute to the economic conditions described in the preceding paragraphs. Among these are: much waste land, soil erosion, large numbers of tenant farmers with inadequate diet, lack of scientific method, no modern equipment, low income, lack of pure-bred stock, low purchasing power, uncooperative spirit, fear of venturing out into new areas of activities, unwillingness to give up old ideas and methods. Such a situation as the one described in the preceding pages created a crying need for professional help which has been sought from every available source. A truly effective small school must be standardized around such educational essentials as: (1) a teacher with specialized preparation and willingness to make rural community teaching her permanent occupation, (2) a school plant equipped to provide an education related to rural life and its needs, (3) a course of instruction and methods of teaching in accordance with the needs and nature of agricultural people.

Show more"A recurring issue in the history of the teacher training movement is the problems involved in securing effective cooperative endeavor between the faculties of campus schools and teachers colleges. In the early days of teacher training institutions instructors teaching courses in education theory supervised student teachers who were attempting to carry out the theory while practicing in the campus school. As schools grew it became necessary to enlarge the faculty, having separate ones for campus school and the teachers college. This caused a breach between the two, and resulted in little or no correlation between the schools. The great aim of teacher training institutions should be to turn out efficient teachers, who can successfully cope with the problems of the modern school. The achievement of this goal should be a cooperative undertaking of all concerned"--Introduction.
