- A bio-bibliography of Norman Mailer.
- Creator
-
Downes, Robin N., Shores, Louis, Florida State University
- Abstract/Description
-
"Norman Mailer has often been criticized on the grounds implied above. His naturalistic style has evoked revulsion, his political beliefs ridicule and reproof, and the sensational quality of his material the accusation of dishonesty. Confronted by the writings themselves, and by Mailer's nonfiction essays on art and politics, such reactions appear irrelevant. To the greater understanding of the man, in both artistic and political roles, this paper is devoted"--Introduction.

"A comparative study of the inclusion or non-inclusion of selected abstracts and the priority of their publication, found in twelve areas of physiology chosen from Biological Abstracts and British Abstracts for the year 1946, is believed to be effectively useful (1) in giving librarians and specialists in this field an indication of whether or not both abstracting services are needed, and, if both are not, which is to be preferred in various types of research or university libraries; (2) in...

The analysis of these differences should be of value to the publishers of any scientific journal"--Introduction.

Children were given instruction concerning religion and preparedness for death. But then, as now, children appropriated adult books that interested them. It is pleasant to remember that children at this time found enjoyment in three books not intended for them: Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, and Pilgrim's Progress. It was into this scene that John Newbery came--he who was destined to be called The Father of Children's Literature. Publisher and writer of about two hundred children's books, he was the first man to realize that children had no stories of their own and to attempt to remedy that deficiency. Newbery brought to children pleasure and happiness in books that had been almost entirely lacking before his time and his contribution marks a milestone in the development of a special literature for children. In the following chapters an attempt has been made to draw together information concerning the life, character, and works of this unusual man and to evaluate his contribution to children's literature"--Introduction.

The modern dictionary as an indispensable tool for learning is part of every library reference collection and almost as universally represented in the American home. Consequently, the selection of a dictionary is of concern not only to such professions as teaching and librarianship but to nearly every adult as well. This writer's interest in English language dictionaries grew out of the study of basic reference sources in Florida State University Library School. In pursuing this interest the writer began by exploring the literature on dictionaries. It was immediately apparent that what is used as a dictionary today evolved through various concepts of vocabulary selection and treatment"--Introduction.

- Abstract/Description

"This paper presents an annotated bibliography of Florida fiction covering the years 1940-1952. The term Florida fiction as applied to this work indicates book length novels which have Florida as a background or setting for the action of the story. Despite careful checking of many sources it is entirely possible that some fiction within the scope of this definition has escaped inclusion because there is no complete bibliography in print. However, every effort has been made to include titles...

To determine the best method of using students as projectionists in relationship to the student as well as the service rendered the school. III. To produce a projectionist's manual for the use of students training to operate audio-visual equipment. It is realized that there are on the market several audio-visual operator's manuals; also those produced by commercial concerns to accompany various pieces of equipment, but through personal experience and the experience of others the writer feels that all of these manuals are too technical for use by elementary and high school students. Therefore the primary purpose of this study is to produce such a manual"--Introduction.

"A knowledge of regional literature is important to librarians in the South both as an aid to selection and as a support for interpretation. Perhaps no one state in the Southeast has contributed more richly to recent Southern literature than has Mississippi, and among Mississippi writers of recent years, few have received more widespread recognition than James Street. Because of this and because the writer of this paper is a native Mississipian, James Street was chosen as the subject for a...
