"One of the many writers who have contributed to the 'Southern Literary Renaissance' of the past twenty-five or thirty years is a young Mississippi author, Thomas Hal Phillips, whose first novel was written in lieu of a Master's thesis about 1948 and was published in book form in 1950. Since that time he has written four more novels, one of which has been published only in England. In general, these novels have been favorably received by the critics, several of whom have predicted that Mr....

Since that time he has written four more novels, one of which has been published only in England. In general, these novels have been favorably received by the critics, several of whom have predicted that Mr. Phillips is on the threshold of what will prove to be a very notable career. Although he has been writing only about ten years, his achievement is already substantial. Since Mr. Phillips is already recognized as a worthy novelist and the indications are that his fame is rising rapidly, he seemed a suitable subject for a bio-bibliography. This study has been particularly interesting to the student because Mr. Phillips was born in, lives in, and writes about the region that is native to her as well as to him. Its purpose is to make available for future reference, biographical and bibliographical material which has hitherto not been available in any one place"--Introduction.

"But what of those who are just coming into the foreground, just now in the view of the public's eye? Should not their work be organized and presented in some usable and available form, so that one may more readily and more clearly see their development and growth as literary figures. The writer of this paper is attempting to present one young poet in this manner, trying in a cursory way to trace his development from a student-poet to a mature poet of full literary standing, and endeavoring...

Should not their work be organized and presented in some usable and available form, so that one may more readily and more clearly see their development and growth as literary figures. The writer of this paper is attempting to present one young poet in this manner, trying in a cursory way to trace his development from a student-poet to a mature poet of full literary standing, and endeavoring in as complete a manner as possible to bring together an annotated listing of all his published works in such a way as to show his subjects, the forms of expression and the themes that he employs in his writings. The paper itself is not meant to be a conclusive study of the man and his works, but instead is meant to be a beginning guide for those who someday will want to make such a study"--Introduction.

The increase in the number of literary awards has created a selection problem for the librarian in that she is not always able to accept automatically a work solely on the basis of its recognition as a prize winner. It has become necessary that the librarian familiarize herself with the background and program of the body making the award, the works per se and subsequent criticism in order to judge their worth for the library collection. Show moreThe increase in the number of literary awards has created a selection problem for the librarian in that she is not always able to accept automatically a work solely on the basis of its recognition as a prize winner. It has become necessary that the librarian familiarize herself with the background and program of the body making the award, the works per se and subsequent criticism in order to judge their worth for the library collection. The writer of this paper, recognizing this problem, was prompted to investigate the worth of literary awards. A preliminary survey of the awards and critics' reaction to them indicated a more detailed study would be justified. A thorough investigation of all the literary awards would be impossible, but a study restricted to one seemed worthwhile as well as practical. This, in turn, would form a basis for the evaluation of comparable awards, for techniques employed here, in all probability, could be used in a study of other recognized literary works. This paper, therefore, encompasses Pulitzer Prize dramas for 1918 to 1950 and evaluates these dramas, in terms of popular and literary merit.

- Abstract/Description

"In the light of Miss Welty's later acceptance and recognition as a writer of distinction, it seems of interest to review the circumstances under which her literary efforts gained for her the confidence of the publishing world, both in America and in England, noting various aspects of her success from a popular as well as from a critical point of view. In addition, it seems of value to consider the appraisal of her writings according to the criteria of professional tools used in libraries for...

In addition, it seems of value to consider the appraisal of her writings according to the criteria of professional tools used in libraries for the selection and purchase of new books with the purpose of determining to what extent the writings appear to have merit for inclusion in library collections for young and adult readers. It also seems of interest to examine the appraisals with the view of observing what position in American letters Miss Welty appears to have gained according to the critical reception of her works. This paper therefore has a three-fold purpose"--Introduction.

- Abstract/Description

"The purpose of this paper is three-fold: to give a brief sketch of the life of James Daugherty and the development of his art; to summarize the contemporary criticism of his work as to his ability as an author-illustrator for children; and to assemble a bibliography of his contributions to art and literature. The portion concerned with critical analysis has been limited to those books both written and illustrated by Mr. Daugherty"--Introduction.

"That a man who has devoted most of his life to educational matters should achieve the widespread recognition as a novelist that Dr. Crabb has should be of interest not only to librarians who are concerned with both matters, but to the reading public as well. This assumption, coupled with the writer's interest in Alfred Leland Crabb as a Tennessean, led to the undertaking of this study of his life and writings. The purpose of this paper is to present first a biographical sketch of Alfred...

This assumption, coupled with the writer's interest in Alfred Leland Crabb as a Tennessean, led to the undertaking of this study of his life and writings. The purpose of this paper is to present first a biographical sketch of Alfred Leland Crabb including his contribution to the field of education as evidenced through his life and writings in that area; second, a summary of the plots of his eleven novels and some indication of their critical reception; and third, a bibliography of his writings, as well as of those used in the preparation of his paper"--Introduction.
