- The biography of a press: A study of the philosophy, history, and books of the Peter Pauper Press.
- Creator
-
Cooper, Virginia Ruth, Rockwood, Ruth H., Florida State University
- Abstract/Description

"Impressed with the obvious quality of Peter Pauper Press publications, the author became interested in discovering the underlying philosophy of the Press, its origin and history, the types of books it publishes, and its contributions to the book world. Because the Peter Pauper Press is so personal a publishing house, it is not possible to write its history without writing also of Peter and Edna Beilenson, who publish, print, and design the Peter Pauper books"--Introduction.

The present study is undertaken with such a view. The present study is undertaken with such a view. It is hoped that it may serve, not only to fill one of the lacunae in professional literature, but to stimulate similar pursuits in other areas as well, and in so doing, contribute a minor share to the advancement of library service. The subject of the study is The Caxton Printers, Ltd., of Caldwell, Idaho. It would appear, from a search of library literature, that no analytical study has been made of this house. It is felt, therefore, that the choice is particularly appropriate. The study has the following objectives: (1) an examination of the origin and history, as well as the governing philosophy of the firm; (2) an examination of the output with a view toward determining the quality, quantity, subject matter, and potential value to the library"--Introduction.

"The greater the variety of people who succeed in unlocking the store-house to their intellectual heritages, the greater the bounty of the librarian. It is with these thoughts in mind that the present study is undertaken, the analysis and evaluation of the contribution of a single publishing house in the production and promotion of books characterized as 'the classics which are our heritage from the past in editions which are the heritage of the future.' It is with these thoughts in mind that the present study is undertaken, the analysis and evaluation of the contribution of a single publishing house in the production and promotion of books characterized as 'the classics which are our heritage from the past in editions which are the heritage of the future.' The firm is the Heritage Press and its outlet, the Heritage Club, an organization which may well be studied to ascertain its contributions to some readers' intellectual heritage. The first step will be to relate the history, purpose, and organization of the club. Next, by making use of the publisher's statements in the house organ, the Prospectus for the Eighteenth Series, 1953, the publications will be analyzed"--Introduction.

"The rise of Protestantism in the seventeenth century was responsible for a deep gloom in the scanty literature which was produced for children during that period. Children were given instruction concerning religion and preparedness for death. But then, as now, children appropriated adult books that interested them. It is pleasant to remember that children at this time found enjoyment in three books not intended for them: Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, and Pilgrim's Progress. It was into this scene that John Newbery came--he who was destined to be called The Father of Children's Literature. Publisher and writer of about two hundred children's books, he was the first man to realize that children had no stories of their own and to attempt to remedy that deficiency. Newbery brought to children pleasure and happiness in books that had been almost entirely lacking before his time and his contribution marks a milestone in the development of a special literature for children. In the following chapters an attempt has been made to draw together information concerning the life, character, and works of this unusual man and to evaluate his contribution to children's literature"--Introduction.

"In view of his success in making notable contributions to the literature of America, this writer wondered as to why Carey, apparently an important contributor of his age, had received so little credit among the historians of American culture. This perplexity gave rise to this paper in which his contributions as an editor, publisher, and bookseller are being examined. In so doing his position among his contemporaries is being studied to ascertain his proper place among the leaders in the...

This perplexity gave rise to this paper in which his contributions as an editor, publisher, and bookseller are being examined. In so doing his position among his contemporaries is being studied to ascertain his proper place among the leaders in the periodical world, and to discover when writers to whom he gave a helping hand lived through the years, why Carey, who encouraged them, published their works even though financial returns were very uncertain, and introduced them to the American public, fails to receive proper recognition"--Introduction.

"During the past fifty years, the number of organized university presses in the United States has steadily, from five in 1902, to many times that number in 1952, while the scope of press activities has expanded to the extent that thirty-five presses accounted for 'about 1.5 per cent of the dollar value of all bound books sold in the United States' in the one year period from April 1, 1948, to March 31, 1949. Not only has their share of the book publishing volume reached important dimensions, but the scholarly nature of university press publications means that teachers, librarians, and book agents must become increasingly aware of the range and significance of these publications"--Introduction.
