Farthing, Betty Jean, Rockwood, Ruth H., Florida State University
- Abstract/Description

"To encourage children to read with pleasure one approach may be to include works of humor among the selections. This requires a knowledge, on the part of the selector, of children's authors who are outstanding in presenting humor on a child's level of understanding. In this field one of the most successful is Louis Slobodkin, who has both written and illustrated children's books. Consideration of these works is the purpose of this paper, which presents the life of Slobodkin with emphasis on...

Richardson, William B., Rockwood, Ruth H., Florida State University
- Abstract/Description
-
"In spite of Hervey's productiveness and his recognition as a popular author, biographical material about him is available only in scraps scattered through a variety of literature. The majority of his short stories written during the early years of his career are also elusive, since they appeared in current pulp magazines, which are not indexed. It is the purpose of the paper to assemble the available biographical and bibliographical material on Harry Hervey"--Introduction.

"During World War II newspapermen found many of their assignments centered on the 'fighting fronts' of the various campaigns. Among this group was Ernie Pyle, who became especially well-known, closely followed, and warmly admired for his accounts of army life. Among this group was Ernie Pyle, who became especially well-known, closely followed, and warmly admired for his accounts of army life. Through his graphic reporting Pyle endeared himself to civilians at home whose relatives and friends were at these outposts, and to military personnel abroad who felt that Pyle was telling their story and was writing for them, as they could not, their letters home. One of these soldiers, this writer, became interested in the writings of Pyle, while serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. In fact, the writer was a member of the 77th Infantry Division, which Ernie Pyle was visiting when he was killed. Because of this interest the writer, in his search for a topic for a Master's paper that would foster bibliographic competency, thought worthwhile a consideration of the life and works of Ernie Pyle. Such a study was believed to be of possible value to librarians and students as well as a practical exercise in bibliography and library research for a prospective librarian"--Introduction.

"The purpose of this paper is (1) to study in detail the history and development of public library service in the towns of Anderson County--Anderson, Belton, Honea Path, and Pendleton--and the bookmobile service, and (2) to trace the development of the Anderson County Library system from its organization in 1958 until the present time. Such a study should prove of value to the staff of the Anderson County Library and other interested citizens. It will serve both as a tribute to those who...

"It may be said that one of the most important characteristics of the professional librarian is his familiarity with bibliographic methods. This is due to the fact that the librarian is responsible for the accessibility of the knowledge found within the library's collections, and that in carrying out his responsibility, he must utilize bibliography. This is due to the fact that the librarian is responsible for the accessibility of the knowledge found within the library's collections, and that in carrying out his responsibility, he must utilize bibliography. As one authority has put it, bibliography leads the inquirer, 'through channels as well-defined as are the entrances to harbors, to the particular record or records of communication which contain the information or other matter which he seeks.' Because it was felt that she needed practice in acquiring skill in this 'art of communication,' the writer decided to undertake as a graduate paper a study which would involve bibliographic investigation, a study in the form of a bio-bibliography. In choosing an author as the subject of the bio-bibliography, it was necessary to select one who might be claimed as being within the province of librarianship. Miss Daphne du Maurier, the prominent English novelist, was chosen as the subject of the paper for several reasons"--Introduction.

- The Atlantic novel contest: An evaluation of its function of author selection.

- Abstract/Description

Literary contests have been quite popular in recent years among American publishers. Regardless of their merits, such contests have raised two questions for librarians charged with responsibilities for book selection. The first is whether such award winners are of sufficient merit as to justify immediate purchase as a result of their being the recipients of the publisher's prizes, or whether such titles should have the same slow, careful screening that is set up by the library policy for...
Show moreLiterary contests have been quite popular in recent years among American publishers. Regardless of their merits, such contests have raised two questions for librarians charged with responsibilities for book selection. The first is whether such award winners are of sufficient merit as to justify immediate purchase as a result of their being the recipients of the publisher's prizes, or whether such titles should have the same slow, careful screening that is set up by the library policy for other new titles. The second question is whether other titles by prize-winning authors could be justified for purchase on the grounds that the authors had been proved of merit in their production of prize-winners, or whether the works other than their prize novels should be subjected to closed scrutiny. For these questions there have been no ready answers. In order to help answer the above questions a study has been made of one publisher's contest, analyzing the Atlantic Novel Prize winners together with a brief survey of later works of the recipients of that award. This study will attempt to show how both the later books by the Atlantic authors and the prize novels have been received immediately by the reviewers and how they have stood the test of time as revealed by their presence or absence in the standard selection aid.

- Abstract/Description

"John Hersey's books have impressed this writer with their warmth, kindness and optimistic outlook toward mankind, and, at the same time have stimulated an interest in John Hersey, the man. For these reasons it was decided to investigate both the man and his works, as such an investigation would prove of interest to this writer and, at the same time, develop facility in bibliographic research, a facility so necessary to a librarian"--Introduction.

"Impressed with the obvious quality of Peter Pauper Press publications, the author became interested in discovering the underlying philosophy of the Press, its origin and history, the types of books it publishes, and its contributions to the book world. Because the Peter Pauper Press is so personal a publishing house, it is not possible to write its history without writing also of Peter and Edna Beilenson, who publish, print, and design the Peter Pauper books"--Introduction.

- Abstract/Description

"Most stations probably keep various materials in order that they may be used again. Because there is a definite saving of time if materials are stored systematically and are readily available, the question arises as to how the various educational television stations in the country maintain a record of what they have produced and obtained in the way of audio-visual materials which will probably be useful in later programming. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to: (1) determine what...

The purpose of this study, therefore, is to: (1) determine what types of audio-visual materials educational television stations store; (2) learn of the physical arrangement of the storage of these materials; and (3) ascertain if these materials are indexed, and, if so, in what manner. In order to answer these questions, it was decided that a survey of the methods of storage of audio-visual materials in educational stations at least five years old would be attempted"--Introduction.
