Show moreUntil recently, the major part of biochemical research has been concentrated on the degradative rather than on the synthetic reactions of living systems. This is mainly due to limitations imposed by technique. The introduction of isotopic tracers and the development of efficient fractionation techniques have made possible the investigation of the biosynthetic mechanism of many metabolites. During the last decade, due to the Coris and their coworkers, the mechanism of polysaccharide synthesis was largely worked out. Two years ago, Lynen and Mahler proposed independently a scheme for the biosynthesis of long-chain fatty acids. On the other hand, the problem of protein synthesis is still one of the major challenges to the biochemists. In the mechanisms just referred to for the biosynthesis of simpler metabolites, the specificity of the biochemical process is always explained by the specificity of the enzymes involved. But when the formation of a protein is considered, the problem cannot be solved by referring to the specificity of conventional protein enzymes, since the synthesis of these, in turn, has to be accounted for. Evidently, enzymes involved in protein biosynthesis must be of a different nature. Elucidation of the mechanism of protein synthesis will not only add to our knowledge about the production of cellular protein, but may also shed some light on many other important problems, e.g., heredity factors, cancer, virus growth and microbial adaptation. A prerequisite to the study of protein synthesis is to work out a simple system capable of net synthesis of a specific protein. Several approaches have been designed to demonstrate protein production in vivo and in vitro. The assets and limitations of each of these methods will be discussed in the next chapter. The approach adopted for the work reported in this dissertation is the net enzyme synthesis in vivo and in vitro. Enzymes offer a useful tool by virtue of being specific proteins which could be rapidly and accurately assayed. The larger portion of the work was carried out using the in vitro system since, in contrast with the in vivo system, it is simpler and permits better control of the experimental variables. The effect of several activators and inhibitors has been investigated with special emphasis on amino acid analogues"-- Introduction.

The treatment of the data was thorough reading of the source materials and supplementary materials to discover the origin of the programs, why they were advocated and instituted, and when and if they were changed and for what reasons. It was found that there were three definite stages of development. Each reflected the economic, political, social, and intellectual characteristics of the nation at that time.

Show more"The most widely used spectral models with the transform method are the de-aliased spectral model in which the de-aliased technique is used in the discrete Fourier transform according to the 3/2-rule. From the viewpoint of the Walsh-Hadamard transform, the multiplications of the values of the variables on the gridpoints do not yield the aliasing terms. In the shallow water equations, we compare the aliased spectral model with the de-aliased spectral model using the initial conditions of the Rossby-Haurwitz wave and the FGGE data. The aliased spectral models are more accurate and more efficient than the de-aliased spectral models. For the same wavenumber truncation, the computational amount of the aliased spectral model is only 60 percent of the de-aliased spectral model. We have not yet discovered the phenomenon of the nonlinear computational instability induced by the aliasing terms in the long time integration of the aliased spectral models. Thus, in the spectral models with the transform method the necessity of using the 3/2-rule in the discrete Fourier transform may be viewed with suspicion"--Abstract.

To recognize that a certain youngster needs more self-confidence, to give him a book in which the hero is beset by the same situation and overcomes it, and then to sit back with the calm expectation of seeing a miracle wrought would be optimistic to the point of simple-mindedness. All that the librarian can do is to present the book to the child in the hope that he will absorb some help from his reading and thus be encouraged to solve his problems successfully"--Introduction.

Painting is the only medium I have found through which I can synthesize my love of life, my criticism of it, my hopes, my humor and the truest realization of my world. It is, in fact, my whole way of life. Through paintings I can clarify my thoughts for, in essence, they are my thoughts and my feelings. Paintings do not simply intersperse my life as emotional outbursts. They are products of my life and its search for a place in the "scheme of things". That search starts with an awareness of a relation of all things in the world--a scheme of things--an order. The search of a life for its own place in the order, its relation to everything it contacts, produces the paintings.

Show moreWhy should a teacher who has not worked with senior high girls be concerned about these adolescents and their problems? There are two possible answers to this question. First, the teacher must have an understanding of the behavior patterns and characteristics of this specific age to have a reasonable amount of success for the year. And the second reason is that many adults have an inconsiderate attitude toward adolescents. These adolescents may be having difficulty in making an adjustment from the role of a child to that of the adult. Therefore, it is indeed necessary that the classroom teacher study adolescent psychology so that she will be less inept, less negligent, and inconsiderate in her relationship with the students she encourages or influences whether in the classroom or throughout the day's activities.

Show moreIn recent years, and particularly during the last decade, the student bodies of American colleges and universities have greatly increased in size and have become much more heterogeneous with respect to scholastic ability and general motivation to succeed. These changes have occurred chiefly because veterans' aid as well as improved economic conditions throughout the country have permitted a much greater number of students to enter college than ever before. But how many of these students are actually successful in their college education? President Archibald of Haverford College made a survey of the 655 liberal arts colleges throughout the United States. He found that of the thousands of students who entered college each year more than half dropped out before graduation. Most of these dropped out during their freshman year. The students needed guidance especially during their freshman year. The purpose of the present study was to investigate certain characteristics of freshmen students at Florida State University who obtained scores at or below the 20th percentile of the American Council of Education Psychological Examination. These students were chosen from those who entered Florida State University in Septemenber 1951, and to whom the examination was given at the time of entrance.

Sometimes these, and similar questions, result in answers subjective in character being framed in such sweeping generalizations as today's youth does little or no personal reading. Such statements have been the motive for numerous investigative surveys. These studies have revealed the value of a permanent interest in reading as an essential aid to personal development and social culture. They have pointed out the increasing demands made by society for greater proficiency in reading. Also, they have shown the importance of the reading program in the curriculum as a medium for establishing in youth a permanent interest in reading both for information and for recreation. Thus far, however, surveys have not established the fact that reading interests and habits differ between rural and urban pupils. This study, therefore, is an attempt to discover what differences, if any, exist in the reading interests and habits between a group of rural and urban children. The pupils considered are those enrolled during the 1950-51 session in the tenth grade in Walton High School DeFuniak Springs, Florida. In the course of this paper, pupils who ride school busses a distance of two miles or more are to be identified as 'transported' pupils; those who live within a radius of two miles of the school center and who do not ride school busses are to be referred to as 'non-transported' pupils"--Introduction.

Show moreIn 1926 the Book-of-the-Month Club sent its first selection to 4,750 members. Twenty three years later the club had 4,000,000 members, had distributed over 100,000,000 books, and was one of sixty such clubs operating in the United States. Much discussion has taken place and many articles have been written during this period relative to the merits of these organizations. The attacks have been made largely on the following points: (1) the organization was foisting on the public in dictatorial fashion prescribed reading; (2) emphasis was placed on economy, rather than the excellence of the book; (3) the young or unknown author was unable to compete with authors of established reputations; (4) a few favored publishers were receiving club's business and would force smaller and newer firms out of business; (5) retail book stores were losing sales because club members were paying less than retail prices; and (6) the book clubs were lowering the public taste. Time has weakened many of these arguments and the fears have proved groundless. But the final charge relative to the lowering of public taste still remains current and debatable. The criticism on this point has been bitter and is one of great interest to the librarian. For this reason the purpose of this paper is to try to adjudge the validity of that contention by examining and analyzing the selections of one of the clubs for a limited period in order to see the quality of the selections as evidenced by the evaluations of critics, both at the time of the publications of the books and at the present time.

Thus historical knowledge gives perspective and serves as a point of departure for building today and tomorrow's practices in government, religion, and social living. Reading about the lives of leaders in various realms of American life can make history more enjoyable as well as more realistic. As a librarian the writer would like to see biography used more widely as a correlative material to stimulate greater interest in the social studies. Consequently the purpose of this paper is: (1) to suggest the value of biography in developing desirable social concepts and democratic principles which will benefit the student in his daily living as well as make it possible for him to become a better citizen of tomorrow's world; and (2) to suggest biographies suitable for correlation with junior high school social studies"--Introduction.

Show more"This emphasis on the importance of a knowledge of bibliography in the professional writings on librarianship led this beginning librarian, in search of a topic for this paper, to decide first to do a study involving wide bibliographic investigation. The choice of the specific subject required more thought. A writer, as the subject, was desired, but one who was not too prolific and who would not be possessively claimed by any one field of knowledge lest this writer be charged with being out of field. After much thought Antoine de Saint Exupery was chosen. His selection was the outgrowth of a desire by this writer to discover the reason for the popularity of his books and a curiosity over the unusual combination of one man's being philosopher, prose-poet, and pilot. The subject having been selected, the next, and most difficult, step was to develop a method of procedure, and directions for this were not lacking: 'In undertaking a bibliographic compilation, one should read as extensively as possible on the subject, because a broad view of the subject greatly enhances understanding of the undertaking.' Hence, the books of St. Exupery were read; standard bibliographic sources were examined; then the material located through them--biography, journal articles, and reviews--was investigated. During this process, notes were meticulously taken, and references were copied and checked. Ultimately, and at long last, sources were exhausted. The results of this labor are given in the body of this paper, which in its presentation is a bio-bibliographical study"--Introduction.

The evaluation of infinite series plays an important part in numerical calculation. In hand calculation whenever a transcendental function is involved, one usually consults a table. Not only do the construction of the tables require the evaluation of transcendental functions, but with the advent of the electronic computer it is usually more convenient to have such evaluation carried out by the computer than to try to store a table of the necessary values to carry out the intended calculation.

It was appreciation of this book and curiosity about its background that led the writer of this paper to select Armstrong Sperry and his writing as her subject. The writer should, perhaps, have begun with an investigation of biographical sources. If she had done so, she would have discovered gaps in information and would have gotten in contact with Sperry himself sooner. Also a knowledge of the experiences connected with each book must surely have added to her enjoyment in reading it. However, that was not the procedure used. Having established through standard bibliographies what books Sperry had written, the writer read them in haphazard order. After consulting the available biographical material, she wrote Armstrong Sperry in care of his most recent publisher, Winston in Philadelphia. In a most cordial reply, which arrived only five days later, Sperry answered her questions about his life, the source of his background materials for recent books, and his work in progress. He added several interesting paragraphs giving his philosophy of writing. Mr. Sperry's letter added greatly to the information gathered from other sources. The first chapter of this paper presents the salient facts of Sperry's life"--Introduction.
