Show moreThe goal of this study was to determine the sediment history of the Cedar and Ortega River estuaries, part of the lower St. Johns River (LSJR) in northeastern Florida. Sedimentation rate data based on 210Pb and 137Cs analyses, combined with the profiles of bulk sediment properties, reveal how natural and anthropogenic factors have altered the quantity and character of sediments in this urbanized estuary. This investigation also provides a chronology for future contaminant studies. Knowledge of the timing of contaminant input to the sediments is useful in controlling the future introduction of contaminants. An additional goal of this study was to test the applicability of two sedimentation models, the Constant Initial Concentration (CIC) and the Constant Rate of Supply (CRS) models, to estuarine sedimentation., Forty-seven cores collected from the Cedar and Ortega Rivers were analyzed for percent water, percent organics, percent fines, bulk density, color, and sedimentary structure by x-radiography. A subset was analyzed for historic sedimentation rate using 210Pb analysis, and a smaller subset of cores was analyzed for short-term (~50 years) sedimentation rate using 137Cs. These measurements provide a record of historic changes in the geological and land-use conditions of the estuary. Additionally, several sets of bridge borings were examined to investigate longer-term trends in sedimentation in the estuary, and to establish the history of sedimentation during late Quaternary time. The large set of dated cores analyzed in this study provide a unique insight into the sedimentation history of a large estuary. In addition to being significant in its own right, this history provides a chronology for contaminant studies. Continuing studies of organic and trace metal pollutants--performed in the Cedar and Ortega Rivers on these and other cores--will employ the results of this investigation to determine the history of contamination in the lower St. Johns River.

Show moreThe response of coastal barrier environments to late Quaternary sea-level oscillations and environmental change has long been of interest to coastal scientists. The coast of southeast Georgia and northeast Florida provides a relatively undeveloped setting in which to examine barrier response to long-term changes in sea level, salinity, and water temperature. Four sites along the southern tip of Cumberland Island, Georgia, a coastal barrier with a complex history, were selected for core sampling and analysis. In this barrier setting, the results provide some insight as to how the coastal environments of southeastern Georgia and northeastern Florida have responded to late Quaternary oscillations in sea level, salinity, climate, and water temperature. The results may aid in predicting the response of such barrier environments to future changes in sea level and climatic conditions.

Show moreSixteen S's in each of eight experimental and two control groups participated in an experiment designed to study the relation between stimulus encoding and retroactive inhibition, in the A-B, A-C/D-C and A-B, A-Br/D-C P-A paradigms. In addition to manipulating stimulus encoding by instructions a modified cued recall test was employed to control for the effects of response competition. It was found that the encoding of instructions were unsuccessful, thus both the encoding and repetition groups reported a significant amount of encoding. It was further found that recall was related to encoding, e.g., if an item was differentially encoded it was more likely to be recalled than if it was not differentially encoded. The results were interpreted as consistent with a cognitive-operant analysis of PAL.

Show more"This thesis is a report on the feasibility of isolating a certain group of mutants. I call these mutants the "p.i.-related" mutants; an explanation of what they are and of my rule for grouping them together is given here. Bacterial chromosome replication consists of at least three steps: initiation, polymerization and termination/segregation (which may or may not comprise a single step). Inhibition of the polymerization step ("polymerization inhibition" or "p.i.") in a rapidly-growing bacterial population causes morphological distortion of the cells, a high death rate among them, and a number of other consequences. Recently, two great regulatory systems for bacterial cell behavior (described in Chapters IX and X) have been elucidated, and it appears that many of the consequences of p.i. might be explainable as the malfunctioning of these two systems. I define a "p.i.-related mutation" as a mutation that satisfies two criteria: First, it either causes p.i., mimics p.i., prevents p.i. or blocks the effects of p.i. Second, it exerts its effects by disrupting one of the two above-mentioned regulatory systems. The main question asked and answered in this report is: How good is each of three different methods of selection for p.i.-related mutants?"--

- Abstract/Description
-
A program for teaching reading for a fifth grade, if well done, will broaden the experience of the children. Effective reading instruction must be based on understanding the developmental needs of the learner and providing adequate guidance. The teaching program must provide large objectives which can be followed throughout the year. An effort must be made to find the best method of creating in the pupils the desire to read both for self-improvement and for leisure time.

Duncan, Beverly M., Leeper, Sarah Hammond, Florida State University
- Abstract/Description
-
Although there are many studies of the results of non-promotion, few sociometric studies have been made which show that the over-age child is not accepted by his younger classmates. What happens, then, when a child is older than his age group? What are the effects on the social status of the overage child? The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to investigate the social acceptance status of the over-age child in a sixth grade classroom.

There is a general lack of evaluations of college counseling programs. This is attributed to difficulties encountered in attempts to undertake evaluation, one source of difficulty being the uniqueness of the couseling problem of each student. Nevertheless, leaders in the field of personnel work feel that there is a distinct need for evaluation and make an effort to encourage further research of this type.

From the study of the tentative edition of the Elementary Evaluative Criteria came increasing concern for improved educational programs in Florida. The writer, a teacher in the elementary grades, gave some thought to the possibilities of the use of the criteria as an aid to teaching. It was not to be used as a "measuring device" to see wherein the school has failed or succeeded, but rather it as to aid in setting up goals to be attained in an educational program for children. Such a program would offer opportunities for the all-round development of each child. With the hope that she might improve her methods of teaching, the writer became especially interested in the techniques for securing, recording, and using data to aid the guidance of the children placed in her care.

Show moreThe need for successful grouping of children in the primary school has been personally felt by the writer of this paper many times in her own classroom. In the years that have passed, some groups have seemed to progress quite satisfactorily in total development, while others have seemed disappointingly slow. Some groups have worked in almost perfect harmony while others have been in conflict. What dynamics were at work that contributed to successful grouping? What forces had retarded desirable growth? Much has been written recently about successful grouping of children. Enlightening evidences of good grouping practices have been reported. While some actual research studies have been conducted, most of the literature sampled reported opinions or individual suggestions for practice. The plan for this paper is to summarize the literature reviewed in the light of grouping according to the needs of children.

Show moreThe problem of finding a suitable instrument for projecting, or influencing the projection of an organized guidance program for the Florida State University Demonstration School is an outgrowth of at least three areas of personal observation and experience of the writer. First, it is a generally accepted fact that students are either graduating or leaving schools each year, in every county of every State in the United States, without the benefit of proper guidance or plans for the future. Second, as one who has taught in the public schools of this State, the writer is convinced that no individual can do a conscientious job of "teaching" unless he is an active, enthusiastic, and cooperative participant in an active, functioning guidance program within the school involved. Third, as a graduate student of the seminary and Florida State University, the writer is convinced of the need for a more adequate teacher-training program. This conversation has come about through studies in the field of education, wide reading and further study of professional opinion in the field of guidance, and observation of the "finished product" at work and as they express their ideas (?), attitudes (?) and philosophies (?) of education.

The primary purpose of the study is to determine the relationship between the central height and each of the other parameters. The study was restricted to cyclones which appeared over Europe for at least two consecutive days during 1950. All measurements were made on the 500-mb chart. Each parameter was evaluated for 263 cyclones and the 24-hr change of each parameter was computed for 208 cyclones. The methods used to evaluate each parameter are discussed. For each pair of parameters, linear correlation coefficients were computed from grouped data.

Show moreThe history of music education in America shows that a variety of activities have been, and still are, included in the public school music program. The emphasis which has been placed on the various media of music in the schools has shifted from time to time, just has the concepts of general education have changed. At one time the important thing in teaching music was teaching singing; the music class became, in fact, a "singing class." A little later orchestras became a prominent part of the music education program. Still later a great emphasis was placed upon brass bands. As the instrumental program became stronger and more active the vocal program seemed to be forced somewhat into the background. Just at the time the proponents of vocal music were beginning to bewail their fate, a new interest began to develop in the music education program, that being an interest in "a capella" choirs. Today our schools have been able to coordinate the work of the various media into a well balanced program of music education-- one which affords opportunities in both instrumental and vocal music.

Each teacher should recognize that definite instruction in word attack and word meanings must be given continuously if one is to attain this satisfying stage in one's growth.

Although this study is mainly concerned with the amount of rain fall which may be expected at ten per cent intervals throughout the state, it is probable that it has many ramifications which will be of value in other phases of water research. In speaking of the ten per cent intervals of time we are actually dealing with percentages of the total time. Hence, 25 years out of 50 years should not be construed to mean the next 25 years out of the next 50 years.

Teachers, doubtless, experience a feeling of failure in this area of their work more than in any other undertaking. Many children and some teachers would be delighted to eliminate arithmetic from the program of the elementary school. In our technological society which requires a high degree of competence in mathematics, this step is not the solution to the problem. To one taking into consideration the usefulness of arithmetic in the lives of young children, it is evident that children must be given an opportunity to succeed in this endeavor; that it should be related to the everyday experiences of children; and that it should be taught meaningfully.

American writers seem to prefer the use of the term excursion while the British and German writers use the term school journey. This is attributed to the fact that Continental trips are of much longer duration. This writer prefers the simple term trip. To him excursion places the emphasis on enjoyment. Truly, a school trip can be an enjoyable as well as an intellectually, socially, and emotionally profitable experience; still he feels that the primary function of an educational field trip is not pleasure.

Show moreHuman behavior has always been of interest to man. Through the ages he has observed, studied and tried to explain in various ways the conduct of his fellowman. We now interpret the fables, myths and proverbs that have been handed down through history as accumulated wisdom, concerning man's behavior. While man has always been interested in behavior, it has only been in the past few decades that the social sciences have turned to the study of child behavior. We as teachers are especially interested in the reasons for delinquency, truancy, and the other types of behavior problems observed in the classrooms that hinder learning. It was previously felt that any deviation from normal on the part of the child was a necessary evil to be endured until he outgrew it. It is now known that there is some underlying cause for this behavior that probably had its beginning in infancy and has continued on through the child's development. If it is not corrected it may go on into adulthood. Until very recently the study of behavior was started with problem cases, and worked back to infancy, instead of beginning the study from the time of infancy and continuing through the process of the development of the child. This study made by the different sciences has enabled the teacher to gain some knowledge for the causes of the behavior found in the classroom.
