By giving the reader an amplified yet sharp picture of life in the Third Reich, Keun not only exposes the Regime's repression mechanisms, but she also raises the question of individual responsibility among the petit-bourgeoisie, discussing very early-on the issue of co-participation. Keun's critical engagement does not fall short of aesthetical quality. A seemingly naive narrator deconstructs Nazi discourse through various literary devices which break the one-to-one system of signification typical of totalitarian discourses. Keun succeeds in deconstructing the Nazi regime by focusing on specific parts of society, zooming in on different situations and on the lives of different people, offering the reader a dissected picture of life in the Third Reich. Hence, Keun delivers a critical and complex political analysis of the early years of the Third Reich"--Abstract.

The subjects are students in two classes of algebra II course at Florida State University High School-- 36 students-- makes and females whose ages are mostly 18 and a few 17 and 16 years old. Algebra II is a course that is usually taken by high school seniors in 12th grade and a few 11th or 10th grade students which explains why the ages of the students are mostly 18 and a few 17 and 16 years old. In this investigation, both quantitative study and qualitative study were employed. The quantitative study was the main study-- a teaching experiment using quasi-experimental methodology that involves two groups-- group 1 and group 2. Group 1 is the control group, where various algebraic/mathematical concepts, or topics were taught or explained to students with the necessary formulas. Group 2 was the experimental group in which the accounts of the historical origin of algebraic/mathematical concepts and the mathematicians (Lewis Carroll, Archimedes, Pythagoras, and Sophie Germain) who brought forward or created the concepts were used to augment pedagogical lessons and exercises used for this study as the main feature of pedagogy. The qualitative study augmented the main quantitative study; it was a follow-up interview for students to probe further an in-depth rationale for the research theme, using history in the teaching of mathematics. The statistical analysis results indicated that there is a significant difference in the mean of score for the control group students and the mean of scores of the experimental group is greater than the mean on scores of student's performance in the control group; and the interview questions responses indeed corroborate the fact that the use of history in teaching mathematics does improve learning and understanding of algebraic/mathematical concepts.

Moreover, several inland stations such as Jackson (JAN), Mississippi and Shelby Co Airport (BMX), Alabama are added to the analyses to make some comparisons. In addition to examining the boundary layer structure of these coastal and inland stations, an attempt is made to investigate thermadynamic structure on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico in terms of both synoptic analysis and model applications. Return flow events of the Gulf of Mexico are mainly examined by using a three dimensional Air Mass Transformation (AMT) model and a one-dimensional Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) model. The models are intende for short-range weather forecasts of the temperature profiles in the lower atmosphere and the structure of the boundary layer"--Abstract.

The respondents indicated that they enjoyed reading as children, and many relied on library services to provide them with most of the materials they read. The Laureates who grew up in the United States had more access to library services, made more use of libraries as children, and felt competent to use libraries at earlier ages than did many of their counterparts growing up outside this country. The reading habits of their childhood seem to persist into adulthood more predictably than their library use patterns, or for that matter their involvement in other leisure activities"--Introduction.

It describes specific sites, settlement studies related to karst features, and environmental reconstruction. As background, this thesis also describes geological and hydrological information concerning karst features, such as their sediment history, causes, and formation processes. It then presents geological information specific to one karst feature called Promise Sink. It also suggests a possible method to date sinkhole formation through pollen and floral analysis. Another facet of this thesis presents the results of a preliminary survey of a karst feature called Promise Sink. Through survey and excavation, the archaeological potential of Promis Sink is evaluated. A mapping gram provides documentation of Promise Sink on many levels: the surrounding area, surface features, physiology, and depth profile. An underwater survey of the sink also included subsurface testing which produced evidence of a prehistoric cultural component"--Introduction.

Show moreSolving proportion problems in schools is a very difficult task for most children. Too often children are taught to use techniques for solving fractions when working with ratio and proportion problems. Although these techniques may prove useful for obtaining a solution to a proportion problem, they do not provide rich learning opportunities for students to construct proportional relationships. Individual interviews, problem solving episodes, and personal journals were the primary tools used in collecting data for this study. The problem solving episodes became the key components in observing and interacting with the participants as they solved ratio and proportion problems. The researcher found that individuals must have many elaborated constructions to solve proportion tasks. Without these elaborated constructions the individual is unable to effectively coordinate the information needed to solve proportion tasks. That is, the individual is unable to reason proportionally. Another outcome of this study was the importance of finding meaningful and doable proportion tasks for the informants to complete. Unexpected outcomes of the study included the effect of engaging in problem solving on the identity of the child and the role of language in giving meaning to the tasks.

Show more"The most widely used spectral models with the transform method are the de-aliased spectral model in which the de-aliased technique is used in the discrete Fourier transform according to the 3/2-rule. From the viewpoint of the Walsh-Hadamard transform, the multiplications of the values of the variables on the gridpoints do not yield the aliasing terms. In the shallow water equations, we compare the aliased spectral model with the de-aliased spectral model using the initial conditions of the Rossby-Haurwitz wave and the FGGE data. The aliased spectral models are more accurate and more efficient than the de-aliased spectral models. For the same wavenumber truncation, the computational amount of the aliased spectral model is only 60 percent of the de-aliased spectral model. We have not yet discovered the phenomenon of the nonlinear computational instability induced by the aliasing terms in the long time integration of the aliased spectral models. Thus, in the spectral models with the transform method the necessity of using the 3/2-rule in the discrete Fourier transform may be viewed with suspicion"--Abstract.

An EOF analysis is performed on this field resulting in variance-qualified spatial patterns of wind stress curl and associated time series. A Monte Carlo technique is used to establish the statistical significance of each spatial pattern. The first four statistically significant EOF modes represent more than 50% of the curl variance. The spatial patterns of curl associated with these modes exhibit many elements of North Atlantic climatology. The associated time series are spectrally analyzed. Most of the variance is contained in annual and semiannual frequencies. Features observed include the individual annual variation of the subtropical high and the subpolar low, the annual oscillation of intensity between the above pressure centers, the influence of localized strong SST gradients and associated cyclogenesis regions, and the constant nature of the trades. The EOF curl patterns are in the form of simple standing waves with wavelength on the order of basin size"--Abstract.

Show moreDuring the 1979 Atlantic hurricane season a tropical wave left the west coast of Africa and continued westward where satellite and ship observation indicated strengthening to a tropical depression from which Hurricane Frederic developed. This particular tropical disturbance has an interesting history. In its westward progression it intensified to hurricane strength lasting less than 24 hours followed by a weakening east of the Lesser Antilles. Continuing westward, this disturbance became extratropical over Southeast Cuba, but quickly reintensified to hurricane strength over Northwest Cuba, tracking through the warm Gulf waters and eventually making landfall near Mobile, Alabama. A number of experiments were carried out on a multi-level primitive equation (PE) model, a one-level PE model, and a higher resolution multi-level PE model (T63) in order to simulate the progression and intensification from a wave to a hurricane over a specified limited domain. Although previous experiments using this model with its comprehensive physical processes exhibit a reasonable predictive rate of success, the early experiments during this case study produced poor results. The most successful forecasts will be examined carefully and discussed entirely. There is strong indication that for mesoscale features a higher resolution model would achieve better results.

Geology and surface topography of the basin is controlled by sediments of Upper Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Quaternary age. In the portion of the basin south of the Cody Scarp, the Middle and Upper Miocene sediments have been eroded and the surface elevations are much lower than the northern upland. The Florida Aquifer is the principal source of ground water for the St. Marks basin. The major producing zone of the aquifer is comprised of limestones of Upper Eocene to Lower Miocene age. Overlying younger sediments serve as confining units throughout the northern half of the basin. Hydrologically, the aquifer is more transmissive near the St. Marks River. Water levels are generally higher in the recharge area in the northern portion of the basin with flow paths generally towards the springs and discharge areas near the Gulf of Mexico. Recharge is predominantly from local rainfall although some ground water is being contributed from the adjacent basin to the north"--Abstract.

It relates wrestling to two of its closest cousins, theater and sports, and attempts to touch on a few of the most important connections and diversions. The paper also provides a brief overview of American cultural heritage which provides a more contemporary context for wrestling's current appeal, and discusses certain particulars of form, process, and production as they express wrestling's purpose, appeal, and uniqueness. The purpose of this paper is to investigate a subject from a broad cultural, artistic, and historical perspective, and determin the origins, appeals, and significances inherent in the form.

Show more"This thesis is a report on the feasibility of isolating a certain group of mutants. I call these mutants the "p.i.-related" mutants; an explanation of what they are and of my rule for grouping them together is given here. Bacterial chromosome replication consists of at least three steps: initiation, polymerization and termination/segregation (which may or may not comprise a single step). Inhibition of the polymerization step ("polymerization inhibition" or "p.i.") in a rapidly-growing bacterial population causes morphological distortion of the cells, a high death rate among them, and a number of other consequences. Recently, two great regulatory systems for bacterial cell behavior (described in Chapters IX and X) have been elucidated, and it appears that many of the consequences of p.i. might be explainable as the malfunctioning of these two systems. I define a "p.i.-related mutation" as a mutation that satisfies two criteria: First, it either causes p.i., mimics p.i., prevents p.i. or blocks the effects of p.i. Second, it exerts its effects by disrupting one of the two above-mentioned regulatory systems. The main question asked and answered in this report is: How good is each of three different methods of selection for p.i.-related mutants?"--

The artistic variables characterizing the pictures were controlled so as to provide information concerning which types of illustrations best facilitated interpretation of the pictures and perception of mathematical relationships. An 8 x 2 design allowed analysis of the effects of the form of the drawing, the number of pictures, and the response condition. Ninety-six first grade children were individually tested using an instrument designed by the investigator. Statistical analysis revealed that neither drawing style nor the number of pictures had a significant effect on either the level of assimilation within the stories, the perception of motion, or the number sentence responses. Analysis of the response condition revealed a significant difference favoring the force condition on number sentence responses. Also, initially viewing and interpreting sequences provided a learning experience to significantly effect the interpretation of single pictures"--Abstract.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate two instructional presentations of flowcharting and computer programming to prospective elementary school teachers. In general, the two instructional approaches differed in the amount of pedagogical subject matter which was integrated into the computer programming content. The control treatment contained no pedagogical content. The subjects (n-38) of the study were students enrolled in a regular CUPM-type course for prospective elementary school teachers. The study was designed to test six hypotheses stated in the null form. In addition, an analysis of the subjects' critiques of a videotaped sixth grade lesson was made. The results of the study suggest that pedagogical subject matter and BASIC computer programming, integrated in a course for prospective elementary school teachers, can cause significant improvements in retention of, and attitudes toward, computer programming. Furthermore, the quality of lesson plans can be enhanced by this integration--Abstract.

Show moreThis study assessed the relative effectiveness of verbal and non-verbal teaching methods in facilitating the learning of mathematics. The two treatments differed only in that nonverbal instruction did not permit oral communication or use of written words. Chalkboard instruction was characterized by complete silence in nonverbal classes. In verbal classes, new terminology was introduced by writing the terms on the board and using them thorughout the lesson. Four fourth-grade classes consisting of 88 students in one school were randomly assigned to treatment groups so that two were taught non-verbally, and two by the conventional verbal method. Two teachers were assigned one class of each type. Treatment and teacher factors were crossed in a pretest-posttest control group design. The demonstrated comparability of the two teaching methods not only points to nonverbal instruction as an alternate mode, but also seriously questions the effectiveness of conventional teacher talk in enhancing learning. Teachers with a creative bent should be encouraged to experiment with nonverbal instruction and design activities for all levels of development. The technique could be used effectively to break the routine of conventional instruction. The importance of nonverbal components should be stressed in methods courses for pre- and in-service teachers. Techniques of nonverbal instruction should be practiced in student teaching practices.

Show more"Let P(n) be a statement for every positive integer n. We denote the set of all positive integers by N and consider G = {n [is an element of] N [such that] P(n) is true}. The principle of mathematical induction can now be stated as follows: If [(i) 1 [is an element of] G and, (ii) for all k [is an element of] N if k [is an element of] G, then k + 1 [is an element of] G], then G = N. Now symbolize this statement as follows: P: 1 [is an element of] G. R: k [is an element of] G. S: k + 1 [is an element of] G. Q: G = N. Therefore the statement of the principle of mathematical induction can be seen in the following form. If [P and, [for all] k [is an element of] N (if R, then S)], then Q. One strategy for teaching this principle is to explain that in order to apply the principle of mathematical induction and assert Q, one must appeal to the logical rule of modus ponens (the law of detachment). That is, we must affirm the antecedent [P and, [for all] k [is an element of] N (if R, then S)], and then we can assert Q. Therefore the research hypothesis for this study was that if people have the prerequisite knowledge of logic, and that if they are taught the principle of mathematical induction in terms of logic, then they will perform better on a criterion test over the principle of mathematical induction than people who are not taught in terms of logic"--Introduction.
