Show moreWith the conviction that a librarian as a member both of society and of his profession cannot afford to ignore popular literature no matter what his opinion on it may be, I undertook this study. I have recorded the story of the development of a best-selling novel and thereby gained insight into the immense world of book publishing from the viewpoint of author and publisher. In selecting my specimen I turned to the ranks of the 'millions of machine-made books' published during the first half of the twentieth century, and found there one book which has received a degree of popular acclaim such as has been accorded no other work of American fiction: Gone With the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell. This fact alone was sufficient to arouse in this writer an interest in the novel. A statement, made by its author, eleven years after the publication of this, her first and only book, was even more provocative and served to arouse even greater interest. This statement bluntly averred that the author 'started more than she knew when she wrote Gone With the Wind..."I got a bear by the tail and I can't turn loose."' This assertion indicated that a best seller makes persistent demands on its author long after its initial publication date, and poses many questions: If such it is after publication, what are the demands before? How does it get to be a best seller in the first place? And what is a best seller? The answering of these and other lesser questions in regard to best sellers in general and one best seller in particular is the aim and purpose of this study.
