The writer of this paper is attempting to present one young poet in this manner, trying in a cursory way to trace his development from a student-poet to a mature poet of full literary standing, and endeavoring in as complete a manner as possible to bring together an annotated listing of all his published works in such a way as to show his subjects, the forms of expression and the themes that he employs in his writings. The paper itself is not meant to be a conclusive study of the man and his works, but instead is meant to be a beginning guide for those who someday will want to make such a study"--Introduction.

The most distinguished award in the field of children's literature, the Newbery Medal, was won by her inimitable King of the Wind. Several of her works have been translated into foreign languages, published in Braille, and made into movie scripts. Mrs. Henry was chosen as the subject of this paper because of her importance as an author of children's books. Although she has been a prolific writer in several different fields, she is best known for her contributions to children's literature and only this phase of her work will be considered here. It is hoped that a bio-bibliography of Marguerite Henry may prove of some value to others in addition to being an educational experience for the writer. The study is intended to give a biographical account of the subject, to examine her books for children, and to determine her place in the literary world as evidenced by the critical opinion and reception given her work"--Introduction.

The procedure for this study has been to identify, read, and analyze all available material written by Burke Davis. Because of the few references to Mr. Davis in conventional biographical tools the predominant biographical material in this paper is from original sources. Correspondence with Mr. Davis and his wife assured this writer of their complete cooperation and assistance in making his study. Several extensive questionnaires, as well as a number of letters, secured information and facts unavailable from any other source. Mr. Davis was gracious enough to answer all queries with exceptional frankness, candor, and insight, and he has been freely quoted in this paper. The purpose of the paper is to provide a sketch of the life of Burke Davis, to survey the critical aspects of his writing to date, and to present a bibliography of his works"--Introduction.

It was appreciation of this book and curiosity about its background that led the writer of this paper to select Armstrong Sperry and his writing as her subject. The writer should, perhaps, have begun with an investigation of biographical sources. If she had done so, she would have discovered gaps in information and would have gotten in contact with Sperry himself sooner. Also a knowledge of the experiences connected with each book must surely have added to her enjoyment in reading it. However, that was not the procedure used. Having established through standard bibliographies what books Sperry had written, the writer read them in haphazard order. After consulting the available biographical material, she wrote Armstrong Sperry in care of his most recent publisher, Winston in Philadelphia. In a most cordial reply, which arrived only five days later, Sperry answered her questions about his life, the source of his background materials for recent books, and his work in progress. He added several interesting paragraphs giving his philosophy of writing. Mr. Sperry's letter added greatly to the information gathered from other sources. The first chapter of this paper presents the salient facts of Sperry's life"--Introduction.

She was a prolific writer, publishing ten novels, many books about the education of children and adults, stories for children, and innumerable short stories and articles. In addition she served on the original committee of selection for the Book-of-the-Month Club for twenty-five years. Family and academic life in the middle-West, and experiences garnered during her travels abroad are reflected in many of her stories, but the major portion of her writings is concerned with Vermont and New England. It is beyond the scope of this paper to include all the literary or critical works by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. The present study endeavors to give the reader a resumé of the events in Mrs. Fisher's life and their influence on her writing as evinced only in her novels, together with a critical evaluation of these works as found in contemporary reviews"--Introduction.

The inquiry revealed that not only was Mrs. Mayer willing to make available an appreciable amount of unpublished material, but that Mrs. Mayer's younger brother, Mr. Edward Gibbons, also was prepared to provide considerable information for such a project. At Mrs. Mayer's suggestion, this writer also solicited the assistance of the writer James Warner Bellah, whose subsequent letter has contributed substantially to the available information. The problem, then, was to determine a convenient and concise form for presenting the details of Gibbons' life and writings in such a way that the information would be readily accessible. After a study of various types of reference works, the writer elected to use the form of a bio-bibliography in preparing this professional paper in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master's degree in Library Science. The first of three parts is a brief biography of Floyd Gibbons, in which the main events of his life are described and discussed with respect to their effect upon what Gibbons wrote. The second is a report and summary of the reactions of the reading public at large and of various reactions of the reading public at large and of various critical reviewers to Floyd Gibbons' books. Following these is a bibliography of works by and about Floyd Gibbons, with an introduction which explains fully its contents and organization"--Introduction.

Show more"Because the Southern Authors' Award concerned books about the Southern region, this writer sought to evaluate their contribution to Southern literature through the reviews appearing in the Book Review Digest. This medium was chosen, because the writer is not qualified to analyze critically each book as to its importance. The procedure followed in this paper was: (1) to obtain background information relative to the Southern Author Award, (2) to gather up-to-date information from available sources, or from the award winners themselves, in order to write a sketch of each author, (3) to evaluate the Southern Authors' Award books through their reviews in Book Review Digest, and (4) to summarize the findings of this paper. Two Florida State University Library School Master's Studies were of aid to this writer in determining the form for the presentation of the data"--Introduction.

"To encourage children to read with pleasure one approach may be to include works of humor among the selections. This requires a knowledge, on the part of the selector, of children's authors who are outstanding in presenting humor on a child's level of understanding. In this field one of the most successful is Louis Slobodkin, who has both written and illustrated children's books. Consideration of these works is the purpose of this paper, which presents the life of Slobodkin with emphasis on...

There has been no previous attempt to gather all information about him and his writing into one informative, interpretive source"--Introduction.

Thomas Sugrue, novelist, poet, philosopher, and radio commentator, was also one of the ablest reporters of his time. To understand this complex man and the influences which molded him, a study was made of his work exclusive of his journalistic writings, which were not available locally. Show moreThomas Sugrue, novelist, poet, philosopher, and radio commentator, was also one of the ablest reporters of his time. To understand this complex man and the influences which molded him, a study was made of his work exclusive of his journalistic writings, which were not available locally. Since at present there is neither a complete bibliography of Sugrue's works, nor any complete biographical account of him, this paper attempts to bring together as much information as possible about his life and work. For early biographical information about Sugrue, the dreamer and doer, it relies heavily upon Stranger in the Earth, his autobiography which takes him up to the age of thirty when he was stricken with his crippling illness. For the remaining fifteen years, which were the most fruitful period of his writing career, the study contains materials collected from the usual biographical and bibliographical tools and from Sugrue's relatives and friends, notably his wife, Mary Margaret Ganey Sugrue, and his close friend, Hugh Lynn Cayce.
