Sometimes these, and similar questions, result in answers subjective in character being framed in such sweeping generalizations as today's youth does little or no personal reading. Such statements have been the motive for numerous investigative surveys. These studies have revealed the value of a permanent interest in reading as an essential aid to personal development and social culture. They have pointed out the increasing demands made by society for greater proficiency in reading. Also, they have shown the importance of the reading program in the curriculum as a medium for establishing in youth a permanent interest in reading both for information and for recreation. Thus far, however, surveys have not established the fact that reading interests and habits differ between rural and urban pupils. This study, therefore, is an attempt to discover what differences, if any, exist in the reading interests and habits between a group of rural and urban children. The pupils considered are those enrolled during the 1950-51 session in the tenth grade in Walton High School DeFuniak Springs, Florida. In the course of this paper, pupils who ride school busses a distance of two miles or more are to be identified as 'transported' pupils; those who live within a radius of two miles of the school center and who do not ride school busses are to be referred to as 'non-transported' pupils"--Introduction.

Show moreIn 1926 the Book-of-the-Month Club sent its first selection to 4,750 members. Twenty three years later the club had 4,000,000 members, had distributed over 100,000,000 books, and was one of sixty such clubs operating in the United States. Much discussion has taken place and many articles have been written during this period relative to the merits of these organizations. The attacks have been made largely on the following points: (1) the organization was foisting on the public in dictatorial fashion prescribed reading; (2) emphasis was placed on economy, rather than the excellence of the book; (3) the young or unknown author was unable to compete with authors of established reputations; (4) a few favored publishers were receiving club's business and would force smaller and newer firms out of business; (5) retail book stores were losing sales because club members were paying less than retail prices; and (6) the book clubs were lowering the public taste. Time has weakened many of these arguments and the fears have proved groundless. But the final charge relative to the lowering of public taste still remains current and debatable. The criticism on this point has been bitter and is one of great interest to the librarian. For this reason the purpose of this paper is to try to adjudge the validity of that contention by examining and analyzing the selections of one of the clubs for a limited period in order to see the quality of the selections as evidenced by the evaluations of critics, both at the time of the publications of the books and at the present time.

Show more"This emphasis on the importance of a knowledge of bibliography in the professional writings on librarianship led this beginning librarian, in search of a topic for this paper, to decide first to do a study involving wide bibliographic investigation. The choice of the specific subject required more thought. A writer, as the subject, was desired, but one who was not too prolific and who would not be possessively claimed by any one field of knowledge lest this writer be charged with being out of field. After much thought Antoine de Saint Exupery was chosen. His selection was the outgrowth of a desire by this writer to discover the reason for the popularity of his books and a curiosity over the unusual combination of one man's being philosopher, prose-poet, and pilot. The subject having been selected, the next, and most difficult, step was to develop a method of procedure, and directions for this were not lacking: 'In undertaking a bibliographic compilation, one should read as extensively as possible on the subject, because a broad view of the subject greatly enhances understanding of the undertaking.' Hence, the books of St. Exupery were read; standard bibliographic sources were examined; then the material located through them--biography, journal articles, and reviews--was investigated. During this process, notes were meticulously taken, and references were copied and checked. Ultimately, and at long last, sources were exhausted. The results of this labor are given in the body of this paper, which in its presentation is a bio-bibliographical study"--Introduction.

Many college, public, and secondary school librarians have accepted the collections as representative of the best current short story writing, and have made them a permanent part of their annual acquisitions. In this study, an attempt shall be made to determine O'Brien's purpose in establishing the anthology, the criteria followed, the procedures used in making the selections, and the critics' reactions to these criteria, procedures, and selections from 1915 to 1949. And finally, in order to determine more clearly what the reader may expect to find in a volume of Best Short Stories in terms of authors, kinds of stories, and magazines represented, an examination shall be made of these three factors in the selections of the eleven-year period, 1939-1949"--Introduction.

The procedure for this study has been to identify, read, and analyze all available material written by Burke Davis. Because of the few references to Mr. Davis in conventional biographical tools the predominant biographical material in this paper is from original sources. Correspondence with Mr. Davis and his wife assured this writer of their complete cooperation and assistance in making his study. Several extensive questionnaires, as well as a number of letters, secured information and facts unavailable from any other source. Mr. Davis was gracious enough to answer all queries with exceptional frankness, candor, and insight, and he has been freely quoted in this paper. The purpose of the paper is to provide a sketch of the life of Burke Davis, to survey the critical aspects of his writing to date, and to present a bibliography of his works"--Introduction.

Show moreThe phenomenal rise in the number of book clubs in the United States in the past twenty-five years has resulted in much being written and said on the subject of their value. The success of these clubs has raised fears in the minds of some people that books may soon be tailored less to art than to the requirements of the clubs' mass audience. The success that the clubs have had in getting the American people to buy books when the booksellers and others have failed, can probably be attributed to one key word that is found in the publicity of all the clubs: "free." A controversy about the use of the word "free" has been raging for the last few years between the Book-of-the-Month Club and the Federal Trade Commission. The Commissioners were unable to agree with the Book-of-the-Month Club's contention that statements contained in the advertisements, disclosing those things which the customer must do in order to receive the so-called "free" books, "neutralize the probability or possibility of deception." The purpose of this paper is not, however, to discuss the controversy of the Book-of-the-Month Club versus the Federal Trade Commission, or to be concerned with the free or bonus aspect of any club's promotional endeavors. Its purpose is to consider whether or not books so obtained are worth having, be they "free," bonus, or priced, and whether or not they are creditable selections. In considering the question of dividend books it obviously would be desirable to evaluate the books distributed by all book clubs, but this would not be a project with a range of accomplishment within the scope of this paper. It was, therefore, decided to take as a specimen the divident books of one such club and to attempt to adjudge on the basis of critical opinion their merits.

The firm is the Heritage Press and its outlet, the Heritage Club, an organization which may well be studied to ascertain its contributions to some readers' intellectual heritage. The reading of several of Ortega's works had aroused an interest in his ideas and a desire to know more about his personality and his literary works. The results of this investigation are given in the body of this paper, a bio-bibliographical study. The first section is a brief account of the life of Ortega y Gasset, with emphasis on the events which influenced his thinking and writing. The second section deals with the philosophical concepts of Ortega as expressed in his books. The third section is a bibliography of his works which have been translated into English, giving the theme of each, an indication of the reaction of critics, and a listing of the sources of criticisms. Howard presents a particularly interesting case, for his more serious and well thought-out plays rank with the better realistic dramas of his time, while the less conscientious efforts show a relationship to the immature playwriting of the previous generation. Whether or not Howard alone would be considered a cardinal figure in the development of the American drama might be open to question. The result of this investigation is this paper, the purpose of which is to find out just what some newspapers are doing to promote and encourage newspaper libraries. Because, it seems, most newspapers of circulations under 50,000 have no newspaper librarians or libraries at all (except for a stack of reference books in a corner), this brief study of newspaper libraries is limited, for the most part, to large-circulation dailies. Show moreAmong the standards for measuring adequacy of junior colleges are those of the various regional accreditation agencies. Such standards are concerned not only with the total educational programs of the junior colleges but also with the strengths and weaknesses of their various departments. As a result, during the past half century the standards have become increasingly definite and specific with reference to junior college libraries as their potential educational effectiveness has been given increasing recognition. The present study is an evaluation of a group of junior colleges in terms of these standards. The libraries chosen for study are those of accredited junior colleges of Georgia, and the standards used are primarily those of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, supplemented by whatever norms for junior colleges at the national level have been derived.
