Abstract/Description: This paper focuses on the experience of Brazilian immigrants in Portugal, compared to immigrants from other Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) nations. By looking at previous studies conducted on the Lusophone immigrant experience in Portugal, data from the CSES Module 4, and data from a small set of Brazilian survey respondents in Portugal, the research evaluates the existence of a “special relationship” between Brazil and Portugal. The existence of various treaties, and policies such as the Golden Visa, Brazilians are given special preference in the immigration process over other Lusophone immigrants. White, middle-class Brazilians have more access to these preferential programs than immigrants from other Lusophone countries. Results from previous studies and the original survey distributed for this thesis show that while Brazilians feel as though Portugal can offer a better quality of life and education, Brazilians still feel some extent of prejudice and exclusion in Portuguese society. Regardless of how well Brazilians are able to integrate into Portuguese society, they are still able to take advantage of preferential immigration policies and integrate into the Portuguese economy with more facility. Brazilians tend to be more educated, earn more/have a more stable income, and have a higher full-time employment rate than other Lusophone immigrants. While these factors play a role in the immigrant experience, and although it is not directly addressed in the data, race and the historical relationship between Portugal and its former colonies can play a role in an immigrant’s experience in Portugal.
