Abstract/Description: The chapter starts with an overview of satellite oceanography, its role and use for operational oceanography. Main principles of satellite oceanography techniques are summarized. We then describe key techniques of radar altimetry, sea surface temperature, and ocean colour remote sensing. This includes measurement principles, data processing issues, and the use of data for operational oceanography. Synthetic aperture radar, scatterometry, sea ice and sea surface salinity measurements are also briefly described. Techniques used to assess the impact of present and future satellite observations for ocean analysis and forecasting are reviewed. We also discuss future requirements for satellite observations. Main prospects are given in the conclusion.
