Abstract/Description: There has been much speculation about the effects of motivation for literacy on literacy skills; yet, the relations between these variables not been established in preschool, the developmental period during which children begin to acquire literacy skills. This study used a new measure of motivation for literacy, the Preschool Interest in Literacy Experiences Scale (PILES), in which children report their interest in literacy related activities. Overall, the validity and reliability of the PILES was not established. However, parent reports of literacy interest and exposure and direct measures of children's early literacy skills were significantly correlated. These findings suggest motivation for literacy impacts early literacy skills even in young children. They also suggest motivation for literacy may increase early literacy skills because it leads to greater exposure to literacy.
