Abstract/Description: This thesis presents and examines the relation of word reading to reading comprehension in first and second grades. The relationship between these two skills is explored and an examination of the discrepancy between these skills among first and second graders is also executed. The examination results in the relationship between word reading and reading comprehension being established. This study also reveals the predictive nature of the discrepancy and its impact on later reading comprehension. Finally, limitations of the study and future research and instructional implications are discussed.
