Abstract/Description: Validation of satellite-based precipitation products to gauge networks in new locations is key to furthering our understanding of current satellite datasets and developing better datasets in the future. In this study, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B43 monthly average product is compared to gauge data from Cameroon, Gabon, and Malawi. The product is validated using the 2.5° x 2.5° method laid out by Xie and Arkin (1995) in conjunction with locally collected gauge data. It is shown to be reliable even though it struggles with local geography. Further validation of TRMM 3B43 at a 1° x 1° resolution shows there is insufficient data in this study to make an accurate statement on its validity, but the results are relatively positive.
