"In the first year of the Southern war, an order was issued by General Beauregard, to have the bells in the State of Louisiana melted into cannon. Many of the church bells and hundreds of plantation bells were sent to N. O. for that purpose but unfortunately, they were seized by General Butler and sent to Boston, were [sic] they still remain."
