Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQ

Q: How do I run a full-text search in DigiNole?
A: Advanced search is the only way to search full text in any object in DigiNole. It can be found in the upper navigation bar, below the general search box. In Advanced search, you can search metadata+full text or just full text by selecting your option from the dropdown menu. You can limit your search to the collection level as well.

Q: Can I download objects from DigiNole?
A: Yes, however it does depend on the object. Images, PDF files, theses and dissertations are available for download from DigiNole. You will find the download link for images and PDFs under the title of the object. For theses and dissertations, a download link is either under the title of the object or under the thumbnail on the object’s Summary tab. When you click on download, your browser will start the object download. You cannot download a book or full text from a book at this time.

Q: Can I limit my search to a specific newspaper title?
A: Depending on the newspaper title, you may not be able to limit your search to a specific newspaper title right now. However, you may search for the title of the newspaper and then limit your search results to Genre: Newspapers. Doing so from the general search bar however will not search the full text of the newspaper issues, just their metadata.

Theses and Dissertations FAQ

Q: Are all of FSU’s theses and dissertations available in DigiNole?
A: No, theses and dissertations completed prior to Fall 2002 are generally not available in DigiNole. Digitization of these materials is ongoing and largely patron-driven. If you cannot find a specific title in DigiNole, please search for it in the Libraries’ catalog. If you find the title in the catalog, you may submit a request for the item through Interlibrary Loan or by contacting Special Collections & Archives directly at lib-specialcollections@fsu.edu.

Q: Where can I find the titles for all the theses and dissertations?
A: Theses and dissertations completed from Fall 2002 to the present are available in DigiNole. Theses and dissertations completed prior to Fall 2002 are discoverable in the Libraries’ catalog. More information about finding FSU theses and dissertations is available at https://www.lib.fsu.edu/find/etds.html.

Q: If I search for a specific department in DigiNole, will I find all of the theses and dissertations completed by students in that department?
A: No. As mentioned above, only theses and dissertations completed from Fall 2002 to the present are available in DigiNole. Further, searching by department name can be problematic, as department names change over time and are not always recorded consistently across different digital objects.

To find a full list of the theses and dissertations completed by students in a specific department since Fall 2002, the best method is as follows:

  1. Start at the Research Repository home page
  2. Select “View All Theses & Dissertations”
  3. Use the facets under the “Narrow Your Results By” column on the left of the screen to filter the search results
    1. Select the minus sign (“-”) next to a facet to exclude it from the search results
    2. Select the plus sign (“+”) next to a facet to limit the search results to that facet exclusively

To find a full list of the theses and dissertations completed by students in a specific department before Fall 2002, please search the Libraries’ catalog. Please also note that department names are not always recorded consistently in the catalog, which can make searching by department problematic.

Q: I received a message saying I don’t have permission to access a thesis. What do I do now?
A: Many theses and dissertations in DigiNole have embargo restrictions that limit access either for a discrete period of time or to FSU campus access only. If you are unable to access a thesis or dissertation due either of these embargo restrictions, please contact lib-support@fsu.edu for assistance.
